Tiny bit of success….. FINALLY…

Thanks. I just went and picked up a couple more tanks this morning so I can collect the next batch due to hatch I am thinking Tuesday. There was a lot on the rock but now the eggs are blending in with the rock so I can't tell how many is even left on it right now.

Hi Mary, I was really glad to log on today and read about your success!!! Yeah! I haven't been on in a while and was wondering how your babies were doing. So happy for you. Congratulations.

Good to see they are developing. You will get runts in batches that just grow really slow. I have some that are about 1/4 the size of the bigger ones of the same age. Usually about 5% stay runts. I'm thinking of pulling a couple of runts out of growout and put him into a tank that I use to grow corals.

To get back to you about what I feed. Usually decap newly hatched brine from just before meta to about 5 days post meta and then they get weaned on TDO. I've also used some golden pearls. It is true that true perc's growth rate is slower than ocellaris. I've always been shocked at their quick growth rate.

Thanks. When do you completely remove all covers that are around the fry tanks?

I never really do. I typically just remove the front one after Meta. When they get moved to growout, there are no more covers. I posted a new thread on the first 30 days with photos. It would be interesting to compare with a true percs. I might have to just get a pair of true percs and try at it for the experience and to start another journal. I had been toiling with the idea of getting some platinum percs, but selling large amounts of these can get difficult since they fetch higher prices. I am now learning that keeping clowns in growout for long periods of time can become expensive with large water changes weekly. The bio load as the clowns grow is just too great to keep any level of decent water quality. I currently perform about 40% water changes weekly. It is not an ammonia issue, there's just a lot of waste and I'd rather not let nitrates build up astronomically. I'm beginning to think that a weekly trip to the Florida Keys to get some water might be worthwhile at this point.

Thanks. Mine or no were near time for the growout tank but I am already changing water - cleaning the bottom of the two tanks I have ever day and I could not imagine having to tend to multiple tanks. So I will have to find inexpensive salt to maintain these tanks.
I will check your new post out.
Thanks for all your advice I know I will need more when it is time to move them over to the growout tank.

Well my tiny bit of success just went to great sadness. I just lost my two oldest survivors from my batch that hatched in May.

:(

sorry to hear that. I too went through a period where I inexplicably lost some 30+ day olds, never figured out why.

Thanks. I am not sure but it might have been because I moved the tanks from one table to another and I had sponge cleaned the bottom and sides of the tank. I had to put them in a bucket while I did this. But I am very surprised I did not lose any in the other tank I did the same for it. I just got up get all the gunk off the bottom of the tank with the rigid tube.

Well I put this tiny GBTA in the fry's tank and one baby knows what to do he is so cute in there. Hope others will learn from him... Sorry if the picture is blurry.

Very cute, its neat to see them learn that early.

Are you worried about water quality in the growout tank for the bta?

Thanks.. I was not even sure if they would start hosting that early in life it is really cool to see that. There are now two that go in and out of the bta.. They aren't in the growout tank yet not sure if they are ready for the growout tank yet. Plus I do a water change every other day when cleaning the excess food on the bottom of the tank. I need to read some other threads to see how old they need to be when they go into the growout tank.

I remember reading somewhere that in the wild they will find an anemone within a week or 2,i think it was joyce wilkersons book or they wont survive. Ill have to look it up again.

Thanks..Let me know what you find... This was more of an experiment for me... The only thing I would be really worried about for the anemone would be the lighting in a small tank.

I looked it up, she states that right after meta they need to find an anemone or be eaten. if the anemone already has a group of clowns they can accept the new commer or chase it away which then the new clown must keep searching.

sounds like a harsh start to life lol

that book also stated that anemones will also dissapear if no clowns were around it, I thought that was also interesting, they kinda need each other to survive.

That is a harsh way to start a new life....
Man I really need to get my hands on a copy of that book. Along with Clownfish 411.

They are growing up.. But there are still some ones from the same batch.
