tips for quieting a sump

Does anybody have any secrets on quieting a sump? The water flowing down my overflow tubing makes a lot of splashing noises as it travels down. Does a duso drain solve that problem or is it mainly for the air "gulps"? How far do you have your overflow piping into the water in your sump? Thanks

Best thing you can do is build a Stockman or Durso. I use what they call the modified Stockman and it works very well for me. I have my overflow plumbed below the sump surface so it doesn't splash in the sump.

How quiet is your setup really? I mean is it near silent, is there a quiet hum, or does it sound like a small gutter downspout?

i only have a small humming from my return pump - ive found that suspending it in the middle of the sump water - using my pipe to hold it up, reduces sound significantly. to reduce spludder i have used bioballs as a good sound absorbing agent.

Reducing sump flow works great ;)

I personally run less then 200 GPH through my sump (135 gallon display tank)-- my skimmer is directly fed about 1/2 that flow.
