Came home the other day and girlfriend had the house like a tomb. Looked at tnak and noticed that ut was 84 degrees! I quickly kicked on A/C and killed the lights. What can I do to help keep it cooler inthe summer. I dont feel I need a chiller since it is only a 75 gal. Running 496W of light. Also opened sump cabinet to see if it will help. What is to hot for a tank and what do you run yours at? Please help quickly. Also wouls a couple clip on fans help?

You could run your lights later in the day or earlier in the day, so that your MH aren't on in the middle of the day when it's the hottest. Clip on fans would help quite a bit I would imagine, but I think it would also increase your evaporation rate. I personally get a little concerned when my tank hits 82 degrees, but I know some people keep their tanks between 82-84 normally.

Any air movement across your DT or sump will cause evaporative cooling. That water ends up in the conditioned space which will be removed by your A/C system. But at a price. That moisture removal uses up part of your evap. coil. So you use more electric.

I usually run it at about 80 degrees ill try the fan first. i dony mind adding water it cheaper than a chiller. I really dont want to run my A/C this early in the year but I will if I have to. Cheaper tham everything dying. Will try different lighting schedule too.

I put the fan on the sump and leave the cabinet doors open I am intersted inthe chiller and will consider it if it doesnt cool off. I have no idea how to hook it up and where to put though. For 60 bucks I bet i could figure it out.

I read about folks losing their tanks in this forum every year because they didn't do what was necessary for their tank's well-being. You still have time to get things "right" before the summer heat comes. Corals are used to stability in the ocean, huge temp swings into higher temperature is a death sentence to many.

Just my two cents worth;)

What do you do for it? i never had this problem before the MH lights. Upgraded from PC

Well, keeping the girlfriend in check would be good for starters:D

Seriously, you need to keep your house at a certain temp most likely. Even then, you will have heat issues that can be resolved with evaporative cooling (fan), window AC unit, or chiller. The key is to be at home on one of the first hot days to see how your tank reacts to the metal halides and ambient house temperature. This way, you can see what the temp trend is going to be and if your solution(s) are sufficient.

I like window AC units and split-system AC units as they keep the tank temperature controlled and make for a comfortable environment for the folks in the room. AC also takes humidity out of the air which makes it more comfortable.

With a chiller, you still have heat being put into the room that the AC will have to remove. With fans, you still have to remove the humidity with the AC. So, window units and splits are tops in my opinion:D

Can you not use a window AC in the apartment?

Either way, temperature control is a must. How you do it depends on your circumstances, just remember there is no one easy way, there are drawbacks to each method. Ultimately, the decision to put metal halides on your tank put you in this position;) Believe me that it will only get hotter as the year progresses unless you figure it out now.
