Tips to prevent rust?

Anyone have tips to prevent rust on stand and such? Is there a certain paint? I'm converting an old family fish tank from fresh water to salt and it has a angle iron frame around the whole thing like a picture frame. I'm going to paint it tomorrow just to clean it up so I'm looking for suggestions.

The tank is a good size 5' X 22" X 22" It will be a good upgrade from my 30 gallon.

on my stand i used POR-15....its basically a moisture-cure polyurethane enamel used for automotive restoration...its designed to paint over rusty metal,seal it and prevent it from coming back...i'm a mechanic so i had it already...only did it 2 yrs ago but it still looks great...wear rubber gloves cause it WILL NOT come off your hands once its dry

Rustoleum if you can't find the other: sand down and apply; but the automotive stuff is likely better. With either, ventilate and let cure.

POR would be my choice as well. No joke about it not coming off your hands...
