To Drill or Not to Drill... That is the question

In addition to Rybren's concern, you mentioned that you plan on upgrading within a year or so anyway. I would save the resources and put them toward the new tank. Ignoring all risks of the glass breaking, tank crash, etc., you are still talking probably $200 or more between glass, silicone, and plumbing parts in addition to the extra time spent working on it

You speak as if the tank is going well currently. Why risk it for an interim change before moving to a system that you can set up how you want it anyway?

Yea I thought about that too but a lot would have to happen before I could upgrade if I did. And everything would take quite a while (possibly years) for that to happen but everything I have been planning and thinking is out the door and changed.....I will explain in another post

Oh yeah as for the holes. .I would simply cap the bulkheads. ...covering them with a piece of glass it's not the most reliable route

I considered this but I have read about many people covering the bottom holes in there tank to add an external overflow.

Thank You everyone for your thoughts and opinions. Its because you all take the time to reply that I think everything over and consider every possible option!

So the reason I said all my plans and ideas are out the window is because I received another tank and everything needed to run it for FREE last night!!:beer:

I met up with a really nice guy last night that was getting out of the hobby and wanted it all gone. So I got:

120 gallon 72" long x 17" tall x 24" wide Tank
A giant Reef Octopus Skimmer with a New Intertek PSK1000 pump
(2) 20ish gallon long tanks
(2) 29ish gallon tanks
(2) Media Reactor with Media
(3) Heaters
(1) 1000gph Sump Pump
About 8 current pumps
About 6 smaller pumps
5 Stage RO/DI with 2 years worth of filters and resin
Tons of Fish Food
His 6 foot DIY LED fixture
Some bulkheads and fittings
5 gallon bucket of IO salt
Books
Auto Fish Feeder
and much more little odds and ins:celeb2::celeb3:

So now I am going back to the drawing board and get to redesign everything. I am thinking of taking down the 180 and redoing the stand and wall and then having the 120 stacked above the 180 both in wall. I was considering having the 120 set up as a SPS only tank since its so shallow. The 180 I could set up as a LPS/Softie/Anemone tank.
I could take and set up the 120 first with all the stuff thats in my 180 gallon system and then modify my 180 without having to worry about it.
Still not sure yet what to do but I do know I want to use both the 120 and 180.

Any thoughts or ideas?

What ever you choose to do I still personally would not silicone a piece of glass over the holes. ..if anything use them for a closed loop that you can run and hide the pipes under the sand... barring that I would just cap them under the tank after a valve that way you could always use then later if you wanted. .. out a screw in plug in the inside to keep sand out

That's awesome. What a great score. Look forward to seeing all of your equipment come together!
