i am running a 29 g that was brackish and was in process of bumping up to marine... i have 40lbs of sand/live aggrogite bed making the bed about 3 inches deep...
i began to come into a very odd problem... i had a nitrite spike (3.3) and nitrate spike (130) so of course i began water changes... over 3 days i wc over 55 gallons (in an 29 g mind you)... after hours of wet play and lfs visits for testing (don't have own kit, working on getting one) nitrite= 3.3 and nitrate= 110.... i cannot figure out why the levels are not going down...
when i say wet play i mean stirring bed, cleaning filters, wc's, moving fish to new tank..... i mean emergency mode here.... and no, there is nothing left dead in this tank, nor was there when this started...
what set off the spike in the first place you ask.... 1 dead fish that was removed w/i 8 hours of dying.... it had happend overnight and as soon as i found him, he was pulled... after pulling the fish i did 15% wc. my sign to any problems there after was one of my fish that was not sick befor began getting cloudy eye and darkened color. that is not the problem here though.... the water perimeters on the other hand is... that and the bed....
i have started seeing things about dsb or 1/2 inch only.... may my bed hieghth had any factor into my problem.... if it is, wich is best to go? 1/2 inch or dsb? what is the best way to clean dsb?
my remaining fish now live in an emrgeny tank. i trashed my water and started new... i am running a fishless cycle now using jumbo shrimp to "kick start" it. hoping i may get the cycle done faster and my fish back to where they may be able to stretch again soon....
i did loose 1 other fish but not the one with the cloudy eye... he is doing good now, i have been treating in the emergency hospital with myracyne 2.
when this started i had (all baby puffers) 2 figure 8 (1 set this off, the other died during the problem), 1 green spot (which had gotten the cloudy eye), 1 valentini. now left are the 1 green spot and 1 valentini.
