To reactor or not to reactor.

As many of you know I am setting up a 90 gallon in place of my 210. My plan starting out is to keep softies and fish nothing to time consuming. I am very aware that with minimal calcium consumption there is no need for a reactor. Being that I already have all of the equipment to run one and have the reactor I was thinking of running it to keep my levels constant, that way when and if I begin to need it all I will be doing is making minor adjustments. Any thoughts?

Personally, if you want to keep it "simple" and don't need to use it, just wrap it up tight and keep it in storage for your next system that requires it. Water changes and occasional dosing should keep you good with what you are planning.

Is not stability and constancy the key to keeping a sucessful reef? Anyway I like the idea of useing it and it being there in case you have an urge that wont go away.

Well I also figured it would give me practice on fine tunning it with the acjr. It also helps build the coralline algae fast, and after killing all of my rock that would come in handy. As of now I am torn at first I was determined to not use it but I would hate to put aq perfectly fine working gadget in the closet. A Geo product deserves so much better.

Sounds like you convinced yourself:D

Coralline algae doesn't make the rock live though, might even clog up some of the porosity that provides denitrification and places for critters.

Im aware it wont make it live and I have 300 pounds to work with so Im sure there will be plenty of surface area for bacteria to grow and flourish.

To reactor.

If you only choose to keep softies for the foreseeable future, the reactor itself should be low maintenance once tuned in and lend stability, which in turn lowers your overall tank maintenance. Besides, you already have the nice reactor as well as a controller.

...300 pounds of rock in a 90 may be a little overkill. :D

if only softys than dont run it

it will lower your ph

if you are done crying than lets set it up and get some sps in there asap
