To Skimmer or Not????

I am setting up a small 10 Gal (Wal-Mart special) tank in my daughter's room. I will be using the Current Orbit 80W lights and a basic HOB filter. I will have a 3-4 " sand bed with live rock. On a tank this small do people use a skimmer or will a HOB filter be enough filtration along with the LR?

If all your are going to keep are softies and LPS, I think you will be fine with just doing waterchanges. If you really want a skimmer you can try one of those nano fisson skimmers, but the reviews seem to be pretty mixed on them.

Skimmers are basically a way to export nutrients before they have a chance to degrade the water quality. They make sense on large tanks, where replacing large volumes of water is expensive and tedious.

But on small tanks, it's generally more cost effective just to do waterchanges. Plus, since you are replacing the water more often, there is less need to provide supplements. Save the money on a pricey skimmer and buy yourself some quality live rock or livestock.

Anthony Calfo does 100% waterchanges on his nano (which has no filtration other than liverock).

Check it out: Anthony's Nano
