If your nutrients/phosphatase are low enough there is no need to run it or it CAN strip all available po4 from water which will starve corals usually leading to a very light brown/pastel look to them. If it is done to quickly you will get stn/rtn. I found this out the hard way. Browning can also be caused by gfo if you are putting to much flow through your reactor and getting actual gfo particles in your system. Make sure and rinse well.
I always change my gfo at water change time so I can run a bit of old water through it since I am discarding the water anyway.
Also if you don't know the happy place in regards of the amount of gfo your tank likes then add % 25 of recommended dose and give it a week or so to see how things do. Corals do not do well having the phosphate levels drop rapidly. I found my system which is sps dominant likes a higher than recommended range of .04-.06 or I get light coloration and a pastel look to them.
Just my .02
Always start at like a quarter of the recommended dose. You can fry your SPS quick. GFO can strip water very fast. I started with 1/4 cup on my 93 and now I'm up to 1 cup after 5 months.
