Im pretty new to all this . We started out a little over a year ago . My husbands uncle decided to get rid of his tank and offered us some of his fish and corals. Which included what i believe to be a toadstool leather coral(i could be wrong) anyway it wasnt doing well he brought it to us on Tuesday . I was just wondering if anyone here could help and let me know if it may be dying or already dead . Any advice would be greatly appreciated . Ive attached a picture . Thank you in advance.

If its new to your tank it could just be stressed. When they are stressed they tend to shed and go a purple/ green colour prior, they like lots of flow and a good light source. Mine was looking good for a while then it closed up and took two weeks to fully open again.

Generally when they dying they go floppy and loose there structure, cant really tell from your pic.

Thanks for the reply. It's currently white. It doesn't seem to be able to hold itself up. Also at the stalk and one spot on the cap, it appears to flake off almost as if it's deteriorating. We are currently using a 6x54w ATI t5 fixture and a gyre with other powerheads for circulation. Should we try and amputate the infected looking portions or let it sit a few days more?

If its brown and sludge like i would frag it inmediately or it will infect all other soft corals. Put the frags with rubble rock and wait for them to attach and make sure none of them have the brown sludge

Here is a better picture of it . It doesn't have Brown sludge . But if you touch it then it seems to flake off where the spot is

Leathers do not do well when stressed. They will shrivel up and slough off tissue which is perfectly normal. They shed their outer layer periodically and a stressful event can trigger this. Just let it be, no touching or moving for a couple of weeks to see if it will recover.

Update us in a week or so.

Thanks for the advice . We will let it be for now then and see if it recovers. We appreciate everyone's advice and time. Will update in the next week.
