Toadstool Leather

I have a toadstool leather. I changed my GFO a few days ago and it has not been doing well. I've heard that GFO can bother soft corals. Is there anyway to minimize this or alleviate. I rinse my GFO until the water runs clear. Thanks.

In a case like this I think time is your best friend. Just wait it out.

I'm assuming you've run GFO in the past and the Toadstool was alright?

I've had the coral for a few weeks. I'm also wondering if it could be the Kenya tree right next to it.

I haven't seen any fish picking at it. I have 3 yellow wrasse, 4 chalk bass, a scooter blend, a tang (forgot the name - the smallest one with yellow fins), a barlett's anthia, and a Bengali Cardinal. I don't think any of those are known to cause problems.

It could be beginning to shed -any way to tell?

It would have a waxy sheen to it and possibly a greenish tint being algae. They all go through this on a fairly regular basis, high flow helps them to shed. It's pretty common for them to shed when changing from one tank to another. I really wouldn't worry too much about it as long as your parameters are in line and you have good lighting and a good moderate to heavy erratic flow.

sorry to hijack the thread, but how often do they shed? Mine just shed a week ago, and it looks like it's setting up to shed again, as the polyps have not been out and it's starting to have that familiar waxy sheen to it.

It's kind of hard to put a definitive number on that, but shedding is usually done to cleanse the coral of algae, detritus etc. If your parameters, lighting & flow aren't favorable the coral will shed much more often. The link below goes into some detail about this I believe.

x2 to what Cloak said. I also find that leathers prefer a higher light area with moderate to heavy erratic flow. The flow is key in helping them to shed.

If you get a lot of glass film algae you can expect the leathers to shed more often I've found.

Toadstool Leather

Alright - I think my toadstool is doing worse. I feel like it is tipping over/moving away from the Kenya tree.

It didn't appear to be shedding. It's just collapsing.

I trimmed back the Kenya tree and the toadstool is doing better. I assume there was some sort of chemical problem between the two of them
