Toadstool Problems

HI There.

I got a toadstool about 2 weeks ago. It was unattached so at first i put it on a rock and used small elastic bands to attach it. They were of course not tight but enough that it would not flop over. We'll he kept falling over and when i picked it up its stalk was disinagrating below the elastic band. So i took that off and used some fishing net and that didn't work either. It has probably lost about half its stalk. It still opens now just can't stand up. I did put its stalk just in the sand today and everything seems okay now. Can i leave it there or if not how do i attach it to something without it losing its whole stalk?

Thanks
Lisa

You can sew it onto rubble with needle and thread. Just be sure not to sew too close to the bottom so it doesn't rip through. Sew it snug, but not too tight. It's better to have it mounted than in the sand.

Fragemented is correct. If you keep it in the sand it will start to rot away. I would make a nice clean cut with a razor where the base looks the healthiest, then use the needle and some fishing line to attach it to some LR.

The great thing about toadstools is that as long as you have any healthy tissue (doesn't matter how much) it should live. If it came down to it, you could lop the cap right off and get rid of the stalk all together. It will quickly grow a new stalk and if the stalk healed up, it would eventually form a new cap.

Good luck and keep us posted.

So if i cut the whole stalk off( as there is maybe a inch left) Do i still sew it to a rock or what do i do?
It open just the base is falling away from it.

It depends on where the stalk is falling away from the cap. Try to leave as much stalk as you can. Fragging corals isn't rocket science for the most part, so take a deep breath---it's going to be OK. I was worried when I first tried this too. You can take any part of the stalk that you cut off and cut it into pieces. If you end up with just a cap and a stalk, you can sew the cap to one piece of rock and sew the stalk pieces to other pieces of rubble. Don't worry about sewing right through the top of the cap---it's OK. Fishing line works well, but I never have any around. I use regular sewing thread doubled. Put it in a low flow area and check to keep algae from growing at the base.

You will have more corals to trade with others in no time.

LMAO........."take a deep breath" To funny....lol

Cause that is about what i will have to do.....Okay so let me get this straight:)

Cut as much of the stalk as i can and pretty much just poke holes through it and wrap it around the rock per say?

And then the same for the cap?
So in all reality i am just wrapping it around the rock but securing the cap and stalks by poking through it a few times?

Just want to be sure before i do it:

Now can it be out of water or do i do it in a bowl of tank water.

And when i put it back in the tank is it going to shoot toxic slime everywhere?

I do run carbon 27/7 but just want to cover all the bases:)

Thanks for all your help.

**Leave as much as you can attached to the cap. You can sew through the stalk more easily. It's like sewing on the type of button that has the nubby thing on the bottom. Just spread it out more.

** Yes. Each piece can be mounted on its own rubble piece.

Just want to be sure before i do it:

**Use a bowl of tank water. (Don't forget to replace it with fresh salt water---mini water change.) Keep the parts you are not working with in the bowl. Before you return the mounted frags to the tank rinse them in the bowl by gently swishing the. This will remove some of the slime and not introduce it to your tank.

And when i put it back in the tank is it going to shoot toxic slime everywhere?

**Won't be too bad if you rinse.

** Glad to be able to help. Let me know how it goes.
