Toadstool

so I have a brownish toadstool mushroom and when I purchased it, it had almost a 6" stalk (for lack of a better word). Last week or 2 weeks ago, the stalk broke - literally crumbled. I never had a problem with it before, it was always open and the "hairs" were almost always out. I have read that it is difficult to kill, and I am wondering if anyone has ever seen this. I went to my LFS and they said they have never seen this and they weren't sure if it was a good thing. I took the crumbled pieces out and my mushroom's edges are turning a lighter brown and it doesn't look very good at all. Any ideas would be great. thanks

Can you tell us a little about your tank and the water parameters Lyndsey?

Is this your first tank? Considering you refer to the polyps as 'hairs' and your tagline says "what experience?" it sounds like you are new to the hobby. Welcome!

We will help you get going!!

Sounds like there is some sort of infection or disease. Do a search for a Lugols dip. I would cut off any area that looks infected then perform the dip. This should keep what ever it is from spreading and help the remaining tissue survive.

yes i just had the same thing happen to my toadstool. Everytime i would try and attach it somewhere it would dissolve around the base, and it eventually died. I'd love to hear more information about this.

I guess I should update you - so a month or so has gone by and it is doing very well. I thought it was a gonner, but it has survived and looks just like it used to! YIPEE!
