Todd's 180 DT System

Thanks Chris

In January 2015 I host my club Wisconsin Reef Societys' party at my home, with my system.

It's always alot of fun, and I try and keep things going well for that yearly party.

This 180 has bee ngoing for about 6 months, my 125 sump was my DT, and most everything was transferred about 6 months ago.

For no controller, no GFO, no Ca Reactor, no dosing pumps, etc. - I'm pretty happy with it.

Thanks Chris

No doubt! Very impressive, my controller saves me all the time.

I've been working alot lately- thank God; but I find time to 'tinker' with the system.

A few weeks ago, my CB Angel took a ride to the sump, and is now in the frag/RP area. In a few weeks I"ll do a WC and take stuff out so as I can retrieve him.

But, finally, so it doesn't happen again, I fashioned a grill for my Coast to Coast overflow.
It was quick and easy, free, and easy comes out when cleaning is needed.
As always, here's some pics

I'm still keeping the grille just before the drains- although the CB Angel did manage to push it over and get down the drains- hence the grille on the C2C

I also began fragging a few things for my upcoming hosting of the Wisconsin Reef Society Party at my house. I like to trade frags for Beer, and give some away too. I'll have at least 3-4 x this when the party starts on Jan. 24th, 2015. If you're around SE Wisconsin, stop on by.

A pair of side view shots, too much glare atm to get a frontal FTS

I'm liking my canopy more and more.
It's really more of a light spill blocker and light holder really.

Gives me plenty of room to work, etc. I can slide it back another 6" if I ever need too.
It lifts off with ease too.
I also included sturdy tie downs- 2 per light- no way these puppies are going swimming!

Tonights FTS- better pics with the room lights off and night outside

Thanks Chris

I was born and raised in Manitowoc WI and after 2 years away for a job I am back. I have been looking for and interested in reefing clubs in the state. Do you guys have a website? Is it open to join? what are the details?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

The site name is Wisconsin Reef Society,
The site is www.wireefsociety.com

Of course it's open to join, and you don't even have to be a member to use it, etc. There are other reef web site groups in WI., I think this is about the biggest, and of course the best :spin2:

Check it out, I'm Todd_Sails on most other sites.

Looking good man, loving the look of the setup, only thing I might recomend, is going with led even if DIY for the macro in sump, will get better pentration from up top, and on sides you will have a more focused beam then the clamp style you got going on, heck even PC fixtures would give you more even spread that way u can prevent dead zones in the macro.

Thanks, that was good, sound advice.
I have a big plastic stick that I turn if over with every few days.
My Chaeto grows so well though with my clamp on CFL's though-
now 300W equivalent, that I'm not changing anything on that.
But thanks, and I agree that the penetration is minimal.
I did PAR meter it and I am getting ~400 under each light about 6" away at the water surface.

More progress on the outers for the stand today:

Finally put the fasteners I had bought long ago on the upper edge of the Maple Ply I'm using to cover my stand with.

Now no more leaning the 6 rectsangular panels up against the stand, and hoping no one would bump one and send it falling. They're finally flush with the stand.

Now when it warms up again, I'll sand and stain them.
For now- it's Maple- all natural baby!

I'm hosting the January Wisconsin Reef Society party on 1/24/15.
I prepare 2 whole Cajun spiced Deep Fried Turkey,
and I have a bunch of my Homebrew Beer on hand as well.
It'll be the 3rd year in a row in January.
The first with my 180DT.

If someone would like to trade for frags, I trade good beer for frags. I always try and make it that the recipient gets the better deal on the trade.
I give a bunch away too- to help promote the hobby.

If anything like last 2 years, everyone has a great time and I frag some stuff directly out of the DT later in the evening.

The frag area in my sump grew a bit ,
fragged some more Acros, the blue milli, a bit of the rose milli, and one purple, one blue, and one green.
And a few more Bali Green slimers.

I hear ya, when it comes to success stick with what is giving it! I know I have always seen better luck with my chaeto when its closer to surface, I always assumed it was high oxygen content since the lights didnt really make a difference in growth till I combo punched high powered lights and lots of surface agitation.

Ah, good info.
I have read that the chaeto does better in higher flow, calupera in lower flow.

The way my sump/fuge is ser up, all the flow goes from the skimmer chamber over a little waterfall at about 600gph fight into the chaeto mass, then it goes to the frag area and RP.
I also have my old MJ1200 in the bottom blowing things back toward the start on one side to increase flow some.

If you can get the chaeto ball to tumble you'll get more green growth and less die-off. A small pump or two in the chaeto chamber will do it.
