Tomato Clowns

They aren't going to breed in a stressful environment. Just maintaining water conditions in a 10g will be very difficult considering the amount of food that Tomato Clowns will need to get up to breeding condition.

Btw, do you know how big a female tomato clown that can breed? Mine is 4".

I think a 29g would be minimum, but you'd need about 100g extra for sump and fug to maintain water conditions.

Perculas and Ocellaris may be comfortable enough to breed in a 10g, but tomato clowns get much too large.

I wouldn't go much smaller than a 40BR for tomatos, personally. They're big and pretty active for clowns.

What does 40BR mean?

40 gallon breeder, it is 36" long and fairly shallow.

Tomatoes can be kept and bred in a 10 gallon tank, although a larger tank might be better suited for this species, especially if it is not connected into a central filtration system or running without a sump.

I picked up a bunch of 20g & 30g tanks on craigslist and ebay for $5 or $10 each. You just need to keep an eye out for them and maybe do some bargaining. Rummage sale ads are another place to look.

Except for a short term QT, I just see a 10g as a suitable choice for clowns.

I can fit only 3 ten gallon tanks atop my dresser, side by side. Unless you can find me a square, but short 20 gallon tank, I can only have 2 ten gallon tanks on my dresser. A 24 gallon nanocube is too tall. My dresser is in my closet, and there is a hanger rod going accross it, (maybe I will get some pictures) so the lid wont lift up. I have a 10 gallon quarentine tank in there now, and was going to get another 10 gallon setup, because of the room situation. But if you can find me a 20 gallon that has the demensions of 18" wide by 21" deep by no more than 18" tall, I will get it. Thanks.

Is your goal to breed? Or were you just wondering if a pair could breed in that size?

I'm asking because if you are wanting to breed you're going to need a lot more room an a lot more tanks than just a top of a dresser's worth...

Maybe if you tell us what you're trying to do with these 3 tanks and the room you have a little more - we can help?

Okay...I have my 60 gallon atop my "entertainment center".

In my closet, I have a 10 gallon that has been running for a couple years.

I am wanting to breed my b/w ocellaris with my orange ocellaris, who have already "paired". They are in my 60 gallon right now, and will stay there. The 20 gallon that I want to get will be for a nano tank, that I want to have a clown or pair in. If those two clowns in the 20 gallon tank breed, so be it. But I only am trying for my current clowns to breed.

Oh ok... well do you have Joyce Wilkensen's Clownfishes book? It's an excellent book for learning to breed.

How long have your orange and black been together? It may take them a year and the right circumstances to start spawning...

I see that you have room for the nano tank and are looking for another pair to put in there. I guess my question is - with your limited stank space - where will you raise all the clownfishes? You're looking at needing a minimum of about 3 more tanks to rear them...

If you're really keen on wanting tomato's... Once you have a new 20g up and running - why not move your ocellaris pair there and put the tomato's in your 60?

Great pics btw! How about a pic of your orange and black pair while you're snapping away? :)

I was wondering about the Tomatoes because there is a pair at my lfs. I don't know what the price is, but I do know that they are a mated pair. Also, I won't move the ocellaris because I have always wanted a b/w clownfish. That, actually, is what got me into aquarium keeping and scuba diving!
