too much flow?

i have a couple acros in my tanks that are losing their color. i don't have any bugs, no phosphate, no nitrates, sal in 1.025, ph 8.3, and i have a 250w hqi over the tank (a 24x24x18).

all i can think is that there may be too much flow, i have a closed loop with a mag 12 running it. i've turned it down with my ball valves to see if it helps.

my green birdsnest is fine, milli's are fine, stylopora is fine, but not my acros.

any ideas?

it's driving me nuts.

how old are your bulbs, old bulbs tend to slow down growth and the colors start to loose their color.

I just recently changed my bulbs because I noticed my acros were a different color than i imagined. my pocci was a darker yellow and dark green polyp when it use to be light yellow with pink tips and neon green polyps

my tri color acros turned to blue tips and pale base

the birdnests (both green and pink) didn't so color change
and my millis didn't either

So i think it might just be time to change your bulbs

that's what i was thinking. i bought this pendant from a guy but i have no idea how old the bulb is. might be time to try a new one.

As long as you don't point your powerhead directly at your coral, you won't hurt it with the flow. And as Carpus mentioned, it is hard to have too much flow for SPS.

How's the polyp extension on the Acros that are loosing color? Same as before or do they extend less? Also are they losing color uniformly or in patches?

Perhaps they're being starved. It's a problem a lot have, including me.

Try feeding more (if you dont have low micron food, feed the fish more, but be sure none of the waste gets to sit around and rot).

i feed cyclopeeze, but i've been reading that it is too large for sps feeding. i'm gonna get some dt's this weekend.

thanks everyone for the input.

If you dont know to already make sure to acclimate everything to the new bulb by ethier shorter photo period or layering screens.

Don't try to feed phyto to your SPS they won't consume it. Use something like golden pearls and etc.

what about other things in the tank that might eat the phyto and the corals later eat them?

The corals have already eaten most of them.

Its akin to putting 5 rabbits in a room with a lion, and then throwing hay in with the lion so that the rabits will eat it. That link in the food chain is pretty much already gone.

well i just ordered some phyto and a new xm 20000k bulb. we'll see.

joey,
Phyto is great for SPS...i feed mine 3 capfulls every other day! :)

Also, I hope you realize the 20K wont give you the supreme growth that all us SPS keepers want...i personally use a 10K with actinics for color enhancement...i have to prune at least every 4 months!
Don't get me wrong, 20k's are nicely colored, but really that's it!

Cheers and good luck!

As already stated the size of phyto is well below the minimum range for SPS.

Feed DT's oyster eggs instead.

..and yes, Cyclop-Eeze seems to be too large.
