Too much light for 'shrooms?

I have a ten gallon tank and I was wondering if THIS light fixture would be too much for 'shrooms?

What are some negative effects with too much light?

It's more light than you need, but probably okay for most mushrooms. Just put the mushies down towards the bottom of the tank.

I may be out in left field on this one so don't take this to heart and hopefully nobody will flame me. During my excursion through my salty water experience I have been told that you can just about grow anything in roughly 4 watts per gallon and of course that is way to much for certain corals. Well it is also my understanding that alot of people out there try to use a lower wattage of light for mushrooms because they say the mushroom will open larger to try to gather more light in lower wattage conditions. No once again this is what I have found out from other people and with some experience in my own aquarium also. So if I am doing the math correctly and that fixture is 96 watts over a 10 gallon tank That is roughly 9.6 watts per gallon and my guess is that the mushrooms may not open very much at all. And you may even fry the little boogers.

i have 80 watts on my 10. i think there are some pics in my gallery. my shrooms seem to be ok, but i have them placed in lower ligth areas. under a ledge in one case, in the corner of tank in another case. and i also made a light diffuser in one area of the tank so i can place shrooms there. when i purchased my light i was choosing between the one you are looking at and the currwnt usa 80 watt orbit. i went with the orbit because it has built in fan, which seriously helps on a 10g, it comes with legs, to put it farther away from the water surface, it has moonlights. two light switches, ad a separate cord for your moonlights=easy to place on timers. plus the bulbs give you four different spectrums! plus youre still at 8 watts p/g! and its on sale here http://www.marineandreef.com/shoppro/power_Orbit.html which is where i got mine. i will post some pics in a sec...

thats the light with the legs on, theyare removable.

this is the diffuser. i placed clear packaging tape on this inside of the splash guard, i drew cross-hatching with a permanent marker, this makes that corner of the tank much less intense, my shrooms over there seem to like it that way.

Should not be a problem. I'm currently setting up a 5.5g and will soon set up a 10g. I'm planning on using the same light fixture over my 10g. I plan on having a lot of mushrooms all over my tank.

its a sponge. my lfs sells gulf rock and this was a piece i bought off them. the rocks been in the tank for probably about 5 months and the sponge has done great, really adds some color to the tank.

i was a little hesitant about buying it with that big of a sponge on it, because i was worried it would just die-off...guess i should give my tank a little more credit ;) R33f3r that anemone in your avatar is ridiculous! i have always wanted to try a carpet, especially with the new black saddle clown i bought, but i have been scared, i dont want to kill something that awesome..

I have corallimorphs and zoanthids only in my 26 gal mini. I am using a Coral Sun 50/50 reef light (18" tube). The shrooms (fuzzy reds (Rhodactis), orange, watermelon striped, D. neglecta) and zoas at the top of the reef are happy as hell, but the guys at the bottom and on the substrate are not so happy. Is this a light problem? Opinions anyone? Constructive comments welcome.

14 watts on a 26 gallon is pretty low, maybe even for shrooms. youre not even at one watt pg, i would put my money on a light problem, at least throw anthoer 15w on there. imo i think you should get a single pc fixture with either a 55w or 65w bulb like this 24" aqualight by coralife for 53$

or the 24" current usa satellite 65w on marinandreef.com, which comes with a moon light even, its only 53.50$ (i use a currentusa and love it) good luck!

Thanks, GYO. Just from your user name, I have a feeling that you know a thing or two about the use of artificial light to grow things! I think it would be money well spent and the light on my mini is insufficient. It was my first sw setup and I still have the light hood that came with the tank package. I just upgraded the single tube in the hopes that it would be enough. Thanks for the link, it looks good.

i only grow my own reef, not reefer! now my little bro on the other hand....haha, but yeah that light will work great for you, honestly if you want to upgrade the lights i would recommend going with the next one up, esp in a 26, but even a single 65 or 55 would do wonders!thanks zarro!
