Is there such thing as too much light? I have a spare 223 MH fixture that I want to put on my 20 gallon tank. I will have mushroom polyps in the tank. Any ideas suggestions?

With proper acclimation, and an appropriate photoperiod, no, there's *probably* no such thing.
The question is, why deal with heat issues (likely significant) and electrical useage (also significant) when your livestock doesn't require the high levels of light? If in fact you are only doing mushrooms, it just really isn't necessary. Not to say it won't work (once you get past heat, evaporation and other issues), but just not necessary.
