Too much light?

I'm thinking of buying an acrylic clam tank and was wondering which light to use. The tank is only about 18" tall so w/ the sand the clams would not be that far from the lights. I have a brand new 400W 10K MH that I could use or I have a 175W MH ballast I could get a bulb for and keep the 400W for my other tank. Right now my clams are under the 400 in a 50G cube. They are about halfway up in the rocks so they are about 18-20" from the light now.

TIA

I have my clams under both 150W (50K) and 400W (10K) halides in an 18" tank. I think you could successfully keep them under either the 175W or the 400W.

I have two Croceas 6" from top of water and 14" from 2x 400W 10K MHs + 2x96W actinics. They have both attached and have been there for 7 months - doing great. Does that answer your question?

IMHO
