Too much powerhead?

Help, please!

I have a 40 gallon "breeder" tank with 4 fish, some inverts, and a handful of coral frags. The only equipment I've had to this point are a heater, bio-wheel filter, and protein skimmer. It was recommended to me that I get a powerhead, so I looked at some forums and settled on an inexpensive one from Amazon to start. It arrived today and I put it in the tank, but when I turn it one it more or less creates a whirlpool. I've tried pointing it in different directions, but without much improvement. The water is full of sand particles, the fish are hiding, and the coral look like there is a hurricane. Is that how its supposed to be?

The powerhead is a Super Aquatic VP-101 800 GPH Submersible Circulation Powerhead Pump.

I wouldnt say its to much powerhead but alot depends on the corals you keep. With that powerhead your at 20x turnover which is a good place to be but most people try to split their flow with a couple powerheads instead of 1 so 2-400gph powerheads would be better. But for what you have now try placeing it in a back corner about 1/4 of the way down and have it face the front glass a little over half way accross and pointed up slightly.

The corals and fish will get used to the extra flow so i wouldnt worry about that unless you have corals that like low flow

I had a 1260gph and it jus kicked the sandbed from the opposite side over to visible glass no matter where i put it. Ive removed it and now use a 780 a 200 and a 400 placed perfectly.
But shifty nailed it

Looks great
