Our annual officer election is near at hand, so we would like to take this opportunity to discuss the functions of each SEASL board member’s position. If you or someone you know fits the bill, please submit a nomination at the SEASL website beginning March 3, or at the 50/50 auction on March 10. We will be electing one Executive Officer, Treasurer, and Secretary. We will also appoint a Newsletter Editor (or two).

Many people have asked what it’s like to be a SEASL Officer, so we compiled a list of some of the perks of Officer-ship.

The Top 10 reasons to become a SEASL Officer:
10. You get to pick your favorite donut flavor for the meetings
9. Dibs on leftover frag scraps at the propagation workshop

We’ve also included a brief synopsis of each office below, and additional information can be found in the bylaws at SEASL.org.

If you’re thinking you don’t have what it takes, think again! The most important thing you can offer as an officer is a dedication to the hobby and to your fellow hobbyists. With just a little time and effort, you can make a significant impact on your club. Volunteering on the board is a great way to get more involved in the reefing community while helping to shape SEASL’s future.

Executive Officers:
The Executive Officers plan and promote all of SEASL’s meetings. Their duties include reserving meeting space, coordinating resources and activities, creating meeting agendas, and distributing announcements to the membership and area hobbyists. They are also responsible for ensuring the club functions in accordance with the bylaws as well as with the State’s governances on non-profit organizations. They work on behalf of the members to organize interesting events and improve the overall SEASL experience.

Secretary:
The Secretary is primarily responsible for recording the minutes and proceedings of all the meetings. The minutes are reviewed by the board and made available to the membership. The Secretary also works with the members and officers to help improve the quality of SEASL’s meetings and events.

Treasurer:
The Treasurer is primarily responsible for establishing financial controls and safeguarding SEASL’s funds. S/he keeps a book of accounts, dispenses and deposits money as authorized by the board, prepares tax filings, and offers regular reports at each meeting. Additionally, the Treasurer works with the members and other officers to make the club better for everyone.

Newsletter Editor:
The Editor is responsible for compiling material for The Wave and publishing it monthly. This position is appointed rather than elected, so we will accept volunteers rather than nominations. If you are interested in helping with the newsletter, please volunteer at SEASL.org between Mar 3 â€"œ 8, at the 50/50 Auction on March 10, or contact Becky McAlister.

SEASL is growing and can only benefit from your contributions. If you are interested in learning more, please feel free to contact any of SEASL’s current or previous board members for the inside scoop.

Thanks,
Brad, Becky & Tom
