I would like to go to the lake some time this year. But with no one to take care of my tank I can no till I get a top off system working. I would like to put a small on/off switch (cylinoid) in the surface skimmer box of my remora pro. The space is 2 3/4 X 2 1/2 inches. My tank is a 220 gal. If my tank get 1 - 1 1/2 gal low the water is just covering the pump for the skimmer. /so tis is why I want the on/off switch in the surface skimmer box. Would like some help.

Sounds to me like you want to need a float switch. Basically you would use the same type of switch that you would use for an auto-top off, except turn it upside down.

If you are going to do that, then you should just look into installing and auto top off unit. There are lots of units out there and good prices and you can make your own if you have a few DIY skills. The more you spend the more reliable of a device your going to get. Nothing is fool proof IMO.
http://www.top-off.com/ has some nice looking units for $65

I used a toilet float which worked great till I decided to mess with it and then proceded to dump 20 gal of ro water all over my floor while I was sleeping.... oops I guess I didn't set it at the right height :D

I have the one from www.autotopoff.com I have 2 of them one is the one that if the one switch was to go out the second switch will turn it off just in case, and the other is a single float on my nano and like Jeff said "there is no fool proof way". A great reason to have a 2nd back up switch, and pray that works. I have two of them on two different tanks in May it will be 2 years for both of them with no problems <knock> <knock> <knock>
