if you're running a skimmer and dumping it regularly that is saltwater you're dumping out....so if you're only topping with distilled you'll lose some salinity
Yes you are right. That's what Randy said in one of his articles. Calibration fluid is often hard to come by. I often take my refractometer down to the L.F.S to calibrate it. But their water and measurement could be out. Calibrating with R.O.D.I water is better than nothing.
I happened to be ordering salt or something anyway so it's an easy add on.
They also carry the AquaHub DIY ATO kit. It's a bit fun to put together but it works well and is not very expensive ($40 for the kit, $1-3 for an extension cord needed, $15-18 for an Aqua Lifter pump which I bought at another supplier). Just mentioning in case budget is an issue! Biggest disadvantage is it requires two plugs to work -- one for the power adapter that powers the low voltage sensors and one for the extension cord that passes power through to the pump.
