Torch Coral

Anyone have any knowledge on these, bought one today, just curious for some input. Oh and I bought anothe fish, I bought a Coral Beauty, input on this as well would be great.

I had one in my nano cube for a while. I never did anything to it, and it outgrew the 12 gallon in a year. I'm pretty sure they can sting other corals. So give it room to grow.

I bought one the other day too and as George said they will sting other corals. I was disappointed in that I was expecting it to glow green like a lot of corals do with just the antics on. I have a Coral Beauty too, nice fish and they like to swim in and out of the rock work. They will eat algae and mine is taking nori off the clip also. I am retired from USN. Not many sailors in OKC, are you a recruiter? I did that in Tampa.

They like relatively low flow and relatively low light. The polyps should gently sway in the current rather then whip around. They will sting other corals that they com into contact with so give them some space. They grow fast and benefit from an occasional feeding of brine, mysis, what ever meaty food you have around. I don't know too much about coral beauty but I have heard they can be coral nippers, so what for signs of stress from your coral.

Hey T-bar, hows it? I'm working on Tinker AFB, they have Navy squadrons there, E6A/B's. Vq-7/VQ-4 and VQ-3 and CSCW-1 and NAMTRA, I'm a desk Jockey, PS2, formally known as PN's, we merged with the DK rating a few years back. Anyway thanks for the input on the Torch Coral. I have it sitting medium to high on a nice center live rock and it has some good water flow moving around it. What do you feed your Coral Beauty? I have the Torch coral all by itself on its own rock, I like it, looks pretty active. The coral beauty is moving really well around and under the rock caves/ledges I have set up. I think he likes his new home.

The torch is fairly hardy coral. As said before, give it room the will send out stinging tentacles 6" plus. Coral Beauty is a nice fish, but as in all dwarfs they are hit and miss. I had one for 1 year and over night he started nipping coral. He was not easy to catch!

Ocean nutrition makes a special blend for pygmy angels. I feed mine nls pellets, formula two, nori sheets, and anything else he takes from the other fish. There not picky, and once the tank matures. He will pick on the rock all day.

I think all the E6A/B's were out of Wibley Island Wa. when I was in. I have been out for almost 10 years. I think I remember they closed that base down so having them more central in Ok makes sense, sense they serve both coast. They really are changing and merging so many rates I can't keep up. I feed the CB same as all the other fish I have, Formula One flakes, Frozen mysis, Blood worms, and nori he eats in all. I have a 125 too, I see yours is brand new. What other fish do you have and are planning to get down the road?

Tom

So far I have 4 Damsels(starter fish), Yellow Tang(Large) and the Coral Beauty, thats it for fish. I have one hell of a clean up crew, 7 turbo snails, hermits(blues and reds), sand sifting star and a cleaner shrimp. Corals, I have GSP, Watermelon Polyps, BP and the new Torch Coral. Anemone, I have one, a Condylactus. Tanks been up for about a month and a half. Got a head start when I started the tank. The Reef Shop gave me 40 gallons of their established water. I have about 140 lbs of live sand and about 175 lbs of live rock. 2 Magnum 350's, 4 bio wheels and 2 power heads. So far all parameters are in check with an occasional Nitrate increase. Go Navy

I plan on getting the following: 1 pair of Ocellaris Clowns, 1 Naso Tang, 1 Powder Blue Tang, 1 Red Sailfin Tang, 1 Blue Hippo Tang, 1 Magnificant Foxface, 7 Blue Green Chromis, 3 Spotted Cardinal and maybe a few others that I haven't reseached yet.

I would leave out the naso, and the pb.
The naso will get very large, and the pb is imo a fish best left to the experiences.

No, not half of it but maybe leave out 1 or 2 of the bigger fish like suggested above. Some of those tangs get quite large.

so you bought the livestock and THEN asked how to care for them?
I'd say most people would recommend you do it in the opposite order.

With that said, Lots of people unfortunately do the same thing, and fortunately you got one of the easiest corals to care for. Just keep it in low to moderate flow and not too intense lighting and you'll be fragging it soon enough to keep it under control.

Yeah I would say a hippo and a foxface with the YT you all ready have would be a good fit for a 125. Then you can still get some more of the smaller fish too.

I actually did my research on these two new purchases prior to buying but I like to hear others input/experience because what you read and hear isnt always the case. The guy at the Reef store said the Torch Coral needs to be placed medium to high in the tank and keeping it under VHO lighting for 8 hours would be perfect. You mentioned that the Coral will be able to frag in no time. What are the signs of it being ready to frag. Ok I know there is a limit on fish but, is there a limit on coral?

youll know its ready to frag when it gets too big for your liking. They mostly grow in a branching variety and you can usually just snap off a cluster with your hands.

I've always liked torch corals. It gives u that anemone look without the possible wandering and stinging. I've always found the flow tough to dial in...not too low that the tentacles lay limp, but not too strong so that they are forced to one side. Matter of fact, I hated cleaning my pumps cuz I'd have to position them just right again. Unfortunately I lost my yearold colony when I upgraded tanks. It got brown jelly disease while my hammer and frogspawn did great

How big do the Yellow Tangs get? The Torch Coral, how big does it get. I came in tonight to take a look at the tank and the Watermelon Polyps have tranfered two more mushrooms to two other rocks. Has anyone seen this process? Do they pop off their colonies or what?
