Total Tank Size - Preparing a Stocking List

Sorry if this information is located somewhere else and I couldn't find it.

When looking at fish and the tank sizes they need, do you include the sump in the total volume of the tank?

I am getting a 6ft 125 gallon tank and a sump of around 50 or so gallons. Should I look at fish appropriate for 125 gallons or 175 gallons?

Thanks for the help!

In general, tank size guidelines are for swimming room for the fish. Therefore, volume of the display tank is what you should look at.

There are other factors to consider, so hit us with a list of fish, and people will be glad to give their two cents.

Right now I am just getting a list together of fish that my wife and I like the look of and may be borderline on size for the tank.

I will put together a better idea of a stocking point as I get closer to stocking the tank and get opinions on that in another thread.

Blonde Naso Tang. Too big
Orange Shoulder Tang. I would have no more than two tangs so one more needs to come off the list

Triggers:
Niger Triggerfish
Humu (Rectangle and Picasso) Triggerfish will not get along with another trigger in that size tank
Clown Triggerfish (LFS said it would work in 125 gal, but online says much larger needed) way to big and aggressive

Dogface Puffertoo big

Sattleback Butterflyfish

Since this isn't a stocklist, but just a list of fishes that you like, it's a good place to start. Unfortunately, many get too large or aggressive or can't be placed together.

Live aquaria has pretty decent tank size recommendations. Spend some time on fishbase too, looking up eventual sizes. And of course, we're here to help.
