Tough QT decision- need opinions!

I really appreciate it! Well if snorvich using tank transfer and thinks it's the best. I'll be going that route. :-)

So...one more question. What is the minimal time for copper to be effective?

I just did 4 weeks.

Maybe effective, maybe not. How frequently did you test copper?

The reason people are getting a bit confused is that tank transfer eliminates cryptocaryon irritans whereas hypo, copper, CP attempt to kill the infectious stage. But if the infectious stage does not present for up to 72 days, one can miss it. So, 4 weeks will be effective most of the time for those killing the infectious stage assuming that the conditions are correct to kill it when it emerges (copper at therapeutic dose, hypo at 1.009). But if you want certainty, I recommend TT.

U just said the magic word (Certainty). That is exactly what I want.

I'm dead serious when it come to ICH and believe that you can definetly have a system that is 100% ICH free.

Was at a buddy's house yesterday and he and I along with another reefer that stop by were chating about reef related things. Well the guy said something about how he didn't want a tang because they are prone to ICH. I said, "bro, if you QT that tang the right way, He never break out in your DT. He looked at me like that was impossible or something. A tang will not break out if you have QTed him and killed the ICH (if he possible had it), and if you have an ICH free system. Most people have ICH in their DT and don't even realize it. Then they add the tang and he gets stressed and bam...there's the ICH.

No fish has to have ich. TT will eliminate and if you rigorously QT, your tank need not have ich either. But, remember that TT only eliminates ich; there are worse parasites that you need to QT for after TT.

4 weeks is plenty for copper. What copper did you use, Seachem Cupramine? I prefer that one as it seems to be less harsh on the fish and the concentration tends to stay consistent in the tank.

However, the preferred treatment for velvet is chloroquine phosphate. Assuming you can get the pure form of it.

Where do you get that?

Man, I'm not real sure what velvet looks like, but Petco has some of the most infested fish I've ever seen. ICH on about all of them. Some have this reddish brown haze all over them. It's horrible. I buy my fish from LA, but get some Nems from petco.

Velvet will likely show it's ugly head pretty quick if the fish has it. E.g. During the time you are doing TTM. I hadn't seen velvet before until a few weeks ago when I got a powder blue tang with it. It died within 3 days. Another good reason to keep a fish in QT for at least a month... don't just do the 12 days TTM and move them over in other words.

No, the TT process involves 4 weeks of observation after TT during which I always do Prazipro. Velvet may or may not show up in the first 12 days, but it will show up within 3 weeks.

Also this Cipro will heal an infected anemone like you could never believe.

See my thread in the anemone and clown fish forum for pre/post treatment pictures.

Also see my thread on my local board for second sick Mag that was saved by Cipro. Pre/post pictures there too.

If you have a preferred methodology, go for it.

No I don't have a preferred method. I'm really thinking TT is where it's at.

I just posted the Cipro and Nem treatment threads because it worked so well. Plus it is kinda related to disease/treatment, but just not fish. However, most of us have or have had a NEM at one time or another. Figured you guys would enjoy the pics and info.

Cheers!

Hey snorvich, would you mind posting some pictures of your QT set up. I would really enjoy seeing what you have at the house. :-) please...

Snorvich, with all your fish experience, what does Velvet look like most of the time? Is it hard to identify?

Here was velvet on my recent powder blue. Showed quick and killed quick.
