I had an ich outbreak which killed all my fish except one and so i immediately bought a QT tank, now i was wondering if i should treat with coppersafe (which i have) for the fish JUST in case?? also for how long do i treat with copper? Cuz i wanna leave the tank fishless for a good 10 weeks to make sure im safe...so im thinking put fish in QT for 4 weeks, then treat with copper for 6 weeks then return to display tank??

Thanks

What I would do is remove the fish and begin treatment with copper immediately, but slowly ramp up to therapeutic dose. Not sure why you would want to remove the fish and wait 4 weeks then start copper treatment.

I've never used coppersafe, only cupramine. I would do 3-4weeks at therapeutic dosage of cupramine. 0.3-0.4ppm cupramine.

I used Coppersafe successfully, recently. One thing I have to stress is the importance of a test kit when working with Copper. No subsrtrate or rocks in the QT either, it will cause the levels to fluctuate.

I read about everyone recommending Cupramine which I am sure is good. Coppersafe was the only thing I had availabe locally. I ran it as presribed at 1.5ppm and after 7 days, the fish were clean---they were BADLY infested with ich. If you follow the dosing directions, it will be pretty accurate. Just make sure to test every day and go the full 30 days--don't stop early because you think a few days less won't hurt.

Just because the fish survived the first outbreak does not mean it's cured. You have to do something. Copper - hypo - tank transfer method. The ich is still on the fish and running rampant in your tank.

Best bet is to put in qt. Treat with preferred method. Leave display tank fallow... Empty of fish ... For 8-10 weeks. Then u will be ich free.

There are good references in here for ich treatment.

Good advice.

What kind of fish are you treating? Some species are very copper-sensitive and require a lower level of copper, if you decide to use that method.

Good advice. Some fish should not be treated with copper, period. Puffer is the most notable one. Scaleless fish are very sensitive to copper and get stressed even below the therapeutic dosage for ich.
