Treating ICH

Lately a fish I bought brought the ich with it. It has killed a few fish in my tank! How do I treat it? I have a 30 gallon reef tank with only red mushroom coral so far. Now I only have one firefish who is infected. Also if he ends up dying will the ich parasites stay in my tank and should I wait before getting more fish? HELP

They say if there are no fish present it will survive for at least 4 more weeks.. " They say". 8 weeks to be safe. if the fish does die off and you don't have much live stock left in tank. Start new again... Make sure you dip your rock and sand in fresh ro water to kill off any ick parasites. Then completely change all your water like you were starting again. It won't hurt if you don't have any livestock left. Beats waiting 8 weeks if your fish hungry

Your display tank needs to remain fishless for 12 weeks to rid the tank of ich. You need to put your fish in a QT tank and treat him by using one of three options. Copper, tank transfer method, or hyposalinity(IMO hard to pull off). I am not certain but I believe firefish have a hard time surviving ich. Dipping rock or anything else in freshwater or any reef safe treatments do nothing. In the future if you Qt your fish you will not get ich in your DT. There are many stickies in the new to hobby section and fish disease section. Failure to follow the stickies will most likely result in another ich outbreak at a later time and make your reefing miserable. just my 2 cents.

Dipping anything in fresh water wont do anything?? Do you know that ick parasites will explode as soon as they hit fresh water.. Dipping your rock and or sand in fresh ro water will be sure to kill all salt water parasites! I'm saying this only as a start over idea. You obviously can't dip the rock and put it in the same tank water.. All will have to be changed. The idea of fresh water does nothing I do not agree. Even salt water fish do that in the wild.... You can also do a fresh water dip on your fish which I don't really recommend because it stresses them out to much and hat alone will kill them. But I know many people who do so... Making sure your fish is QT is a great way to introduce healthy fish in your tank. Ask your LFS to hold a fish if you like it for a week or two and make sure you watch it eat.. that's what I do. Ohh and I never acclimate my fish before putting them in.. I Only acclimate to temperature. I try not to stress them out the most I can. If your water parameters are in check you will have no problem doing this.. It's always worked for me. This is all my opinion. People do things different ways I'm just telling you what has worked for me by experience and by trying many methods that don't work.

I am not going to argue the point of fresh water dips. The stickies are posted with proven methods that will rid your tank and fish of ich. The OP can follow these or any other method he/she chooses. It does not affect me one way or the other. I wish them the best in their reefing endeavors. I should make it clear that all fish need to be removed from the DT and treated.

there are only 3 proven cures of ich
1. Copper
2. hypo
3. tank transfer

and leaving tank 8 weeks fishless can rid ich. more time the better but 8 weeks minimum.
