Treating Sea water?

I live 5 minutes from the intracoastal and I'm thinking about getting water there for my water changes. I know a lot of the local stores do that too. I believe they use a filter system and a uv. Does that sound like it will solve any potential problems? I think it will be cheaper in the long and more effiecient. any idea?

Also, which UV would you recommend?

o yea, in the next day or so I'm going to get a sample of the intracoastal water and give a full test of it... that will be more of a factor whether to use it or not

I would not use intracoastal water for a few reasons.

SG can change with a lot of rainfall.

Lots of bad runoff from roads. Most all street drainage ends up in the intracoastal.

Nutrient level can be elevated.

I'm in east central Florida coast and here no clams or oysters can be taken or eaten because of the polluted waters. That should tell you something. I'm sure the same in Palm Beach.

Why not go a little farther east and get ocean water?

intracoastal access is a lot easier than the ocean, at least here. Regardless, does anyone have a prefered brand of UV to use?

I am almost positive that many of the LFS get their water from the intracoastal.
