I have some tridacna clams in my tank, smallest one is 4 inches, do you think a mantis will cause issues to my clams? i'd like to get a smasher as my lfs guy told me they should leave my anthias and chromis alone. I'm worried if i get a 4 inch mantis, my clams are history.

thanks

again i say, it all depends on the mantis and its attitude.
there are some that are completely fine in a tank with fish.
others kill everything in sight.
an option is ask the guy at the lfs to put in some chromis with his mantis and see if it attacks, they are pretty cheap fish so if it does die i don't think it would be a big deal.
but you still have the question of clams.
my best suggestion is getting a 25 gallon (at the least) and give the mantis his own home until you see what his/her attitude is like.

I kept a hippo clam in with my G.grapherus with no issues. But it is a risk. IMO if the clam is as big or larger than the mantis and the mantis isn't starving then I think the mantis will probably leave the clam alone.

I made the mistake of storing my a bunch of chromis (only six) in a 2 foot tank that housed a 3" smasher whilst i was moving house...
He killed two of them in the space of about three hours. it's the only time he's ever killed something without eating it.
Sort of makes me think it may have been more of a territorial thing than a food issue. (he's quite well fed).
I wouldn't recommend it...
