Trigger and Angel V. Maroon Clown???

I have a bit of a situation in the works here. I started my tank with a 3" Niger trigger and a 3" Heraldi Angel..... now the problem is that they wont allow anything else to come into the tank! I have went through an Allens Damsel and a Orange Tail Damsel so far trying. For the first day they dont seem to even notice the new neighbor..... then when the lights go out all hell breaks lose (though i have yet to see it). When i woke up both mornings i noticed that each damsel had some scuff marks on their scales.... both were still swimming fine and eating (by the way these two fish were added weeks apart and are 2 separate instances).... so i figured that was the end of it. Neither fish (trig or angel)shown any signs of aggression toward the newcommer during the day.... no chasing, no nipping, not even any agression when food was present. Then on the morning of day three both times i found the fish, or a least what was left of it, lying on the sand in peices!!

My problem is that i dont know if its the angel or the trigger... but im guessing its the trig due to the damage inflicted. AND my new GSM clown is coming from live aquaria tommorrow!!

I have a bubble tip established already for it to inhabit so my guess is that should help it establish a territory shortly after introduction to the tank. And GSM are pretty reknown for being nasty in their own right so im hoping that at 1 3/4" it will be able to hold his own.

I didnt have a chance to get either of the damsels out before day three..... this time im yanking somebody out of the tank at the first sign of anything out of the ordinary!

Any suggestions? Do you think the GSM will hold his own?

BTW... i tried rearranging rock work upon introduction.... no dice.

Luckily maroon clowns take to their anemones quickly - but unless it's quite large, it probably won't prtect him especially at night. I used to have a teeny Valentini puffer who loved to nip the clown fins while they were sleeping. A large established female maroon can hold her own with aggressive fish - but I'm not confident at all about your small juvenile maroon.

The trigger should have been added after the more docile fish. I know it's hard to do everything the correct way though. At this point if it was me, I'd remove the trigger for a while until I'd added the others. Or I'd consider finding a different home for the maroon.

BTW I read somewhere that once your trigger has tasted damsel, they won't be safe in the tank again.

As someone who's had maroons with aggresive fish I can say confidently that your new one is going to get dominated by that Niger and probably worse than the damsels if it does want to.

Thanks for the replies.... as for the anemone.... its about 8-9" with pretty long tentacles. BUT i think the trigger is gonna take a tank vacation to qt. Should give the maroon long enough to settle in.

I would look for other problems in the tank. nigers are usually on the mellow side. what other inhabitants do you have in the tank? what kind of inverts . I had a green emerald crab that would take swipes at fish in the middle of the night as well as some stary hermits that were total jerks

no hermits what so ever... just snails and peppermint shrimp that do more fish cleaning than anything else. It had to be him... there heraldi doesnt have the teeth to do a job like that. I cant believe it either he hasnt been agressive in any way while in my presence? Im trying to get him out today but not doing so hot.... any suggestions?

I agree no way was it the Herald's angel. IME they tend to mind their own business unless a rowdy damsel tries to be the boss

Oh... catching the trigger.... I had a huma huma once - just held some food in one hand & nabbed him with the other
Here's a thread with some ideas - hope it helps :)

Mitzel..........i thought about what you said and low and behold it happened. Im sitting in my living room and i began to here "clicking" coming from my tank!!!! Unless my trigger or angel learned morris code when i was gone at work....i think my problem may be a mantis!!!!!

Thanks for the thread angel*fish... i really appreciate your all your help..... but i think that i may have jumped to conclusions blaming my trigger as i mentioned to mitzel above. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT CATCHING MANTIS SHRIMP??

My new GSM clown is amazing! Liveaquaria picked out one EXACTLY to my specifications! NO WAY is he going in there until the culprit is caught.

the clicking could also be the trigger.
and nigers can be a bit psytzo in their personalities. dont rule anything out yet
mantis are pretty smart, you can try a mantis trap, but they can even out smart in those.
