Trigger for a 40. Can it be done?

Hello All,

I recently got the finances to refurnish an old 40 gallon tank that was lieing in my basement. It's looking pretty good. It is 4 feet long. Since I already have a reef, I wanted this one to be an aggressive predator tank. The Tank finished cycling about a month ago and I think i'm ready to put in my first fish. I'm a fan of Tetradontiformes, especially Triggers. I'm wondering if I can get away with a single Humu Humu in that tank? If not, is there any trigger or puffer (excluding Sharpnoses and tobies) that I can put in there?

I would say no way, but that IMO. I would say you could get a dwarf lionfish which is a very neat little predator.

Agreed. All of the triggers grow too large to be housed long term in a tank that size.

even an undy would eventually outgrow that tank. go frogfish they are awesome, there is currently a thread in this forum that has some very stunning pics of different frogfish and anglers tht people are keeping.

you could get a female BLUE THROAT trigger. They do not get too large.Or an UNDULATED trigger.They only get about 11inches.Warning!Undulated's are super nasty.

Thanks Guys! I'll skip the trigger. Any other cool predators that could be kept in a tank that size? How about A Big-Eyed Soldierfish?

go for a dwarf lion fish . they are a good small preditory fish .
