Trigger in 180g

Hi all

I am searching for a last addition to my 180g tank. I dont know if I should get a group of anthias or maybe a small trigger?

Is it possible to keep a trigger in a 180g mixed reef? I do not have clams or cleaner shrimps in the tank.

If yes, which trigger would be best?

cheers
steven

Clams and cleaner shrimp are fine if you get the right trigger. A blue throat, crosshatch or sargassum all fit the bill. My sargassum doesn't bother my clam or my shrimp. Some will say niger trigger too, but they are hit or miss

i agree with Dmorty217 the blue jaw sargassum and crosshatches are your safest bets in a reef, i wouldn't try any of the iffy triggers like nigers and pinktails.

nigers and pinktails can be considered in a reef...see tony vargas' article highlighting reefsafe trigs in aquarium mag. aug 2009 (I think.)

I really like the sargassum.. This trigger looks so cool! what do you think if i would get a small one? as small as possible maybe? what about the aggression towards him? theres a majestic, tomini and a moorish idol in the tank..

My pinktail trigger in a mixed reef

My pinktail trigger in a mixed reef

I have a pinktail who is a perfect mixed reef citizen. He goes for nightly cleaning with my skunk shrimp, and hasn't bothered anything at all in the tank including snails, crabs, and peppermint shrimp. He was added after the inverts, which may have made a difference - however I have also added inverts since his arrival and he doesn't bother them either.

and how does the sargassum do in a reef? does this trigger swim alot?
and is he hard to keep? ive never had a trigger and do not know how they do..
would love some infos

I have a pair of blue throat triggers in my 6' 220. they do fine, have never bothered anything. I will warn you as I didn't see anyone address this issue when skimming through the thread. Male blue throat triggers are hit and miss. Some are harvested with cyonide (overlook the spelling). My first male I had in my tank for about a month and he literally, and I mean literally mean he fell over dead. After some research I figured out that he had cyonide poisoning. There apparently aren't any symptoms just death. I was able to find another one at a lfs for $39.99 and went ahead and gave it another try because they are a beautiful fish, especially if you have a female in the tank. If you decide on a trigger I would no doubt ask about the harvesting tactics of your lfs suppliers.

So I still couldnt decide which trigger I should get.. blue throat or red tail? :) hmmm..
which one would be better in your opinion? Like I said in a 180g tank without shrimps and snails etc..

I have one I'm my reef that is a model citizen he is about 4.5" and is a great addition to my tank. I have shrimp and snails neither of which the trigger looks at twice and I do have some smaller fish that he could easily take a chunk out of if he wanted to. For close to the same price as the sargassum you could get a male crosshatch. They don't ship very well, so there is that

Where can one find a male crosshatch for anywhere close to $150?

200$ diver direct from Hawaii. If you want a small one under 4" they will cost you much more because of how they have to catch them.

Interesting. Any divers have websites in particular that you recommend? I imagine then that diver direct on Sargussums would be much less, no?
