Triggers in REEF

From the time I started with marine tanks I have always been told that you can't place a trigger in a reef tank. But as of late I have been really thinking about this and I would say that it is ok if there isn't any shrimp/crabs in the tank ..... Right?

What do you think? :rolleye1:

I really want to place a trigger in with an Anemone.

the anemone might cause an issue but im not sure. ive seen certan triggers in reef set ups (sargassum, blue throat, crosshatch, etc) but never had one myself.

any other opinions?

I have a blue jaw trigger in my reef with no problems - I had a pair but lost the male - the saragassum trigger is also considered reef safe. I have also seen a pink tail in a reef

I agree, some trigger species can live in a reef setting with no problem, just make sure you got enough room since they almost all get big.

Like steven said, there are several species that can be kept in a reef tank with no difficulties. The Xanthichthys triggers are your best bets (crosshatch, sargassum, bluejaw, goldenback). Many people keep pinktails with no problem. Many also keep niger triggers with no problem (though, IME, these are more variable than any of the others, and will be either perfect citizens or armageddon for your reef).

I am keping two sargassum in my reef without problem...going on 1 month now. I kept a solitary sargassum for ove a year and he bagn to eat cleaner shrimp after I fed him an acro crab, so my reccomendation is to not feed anything alive to the trigger.
