Triggers

A question abouot triggers How hard are they on your liverock? I have seen shows stating that a triggercan chew up a softball size piece of rock in teh ocean in about 6 months is this the case and is it more pronounced in a tank or not?

Some are more docile than others. The clowntrigger can get freakishly rough, I have seen one that was the size of a football and I could not even get my hand inside the tank. There are some more reef friendly triggers like the bluethroat, niger, and pinktail.

It all depends on the trigger it self.I have owned all of the trigger species and i usually try to pick out the least aggressive ones at the fish store and then i feed really heavy with frozen food to keep there aggression in check.Never feed triggers live food as this will let there aggression come out faster. As for chomping on live rock.Out of all my triggers my picasso and golden heart are the only ones that chomp on rock but not enough to really destroy it.Now me queen trigger will move my rocks around the tank, but not chomp on them.

Thanks guys I guess I will just pass on the trigger idea my son wanted a triangular and I found a shop selling them for 25 bucks but not if it is going to be agressive towards the rest of the fish in the tank.

Agreed with the above posts, but my 2 current Triggers don't bother the LR, my Sunset Wrasse on the other hand is very hard on it....I would say the Rhinecanthus Triggers are more hard on LR, and the real aggressors too.

Oops I was wrong it was a rectangular trigger he wanted here is teh fish he almost bought it is small still only about 3-4 inches long at most.

Both the Huma and the Rectangle Huma are curious fish that like to "mess with stuff" for lack of a better description....They will likely pick at live rock, dig in the sand and move any rock they can pick up to where they would like it. Wonderful fish though.

Ya but the problem is I do not think it would be too compatible with my large mexican turbos or my cleaner or peppermint shrimp or my chromis or clowns or even the cardinals. Mind you if I got it while it was small would it do much or only after it gets much larger? If it is ok while it is small I may let my son get it then move it/trade it in when he gets too large.

It would probably be fine with the fish for awhile but you can kiss your snails and shrimp goodbye if you get one!! Even a small one will take the inverts out....

Maybe I will buy it a bunch of peps then they are only a few bucks rather than the 20 dollar cleaners LOL.

Triggers usually leave cleaner shrimp alone.

They will eat any other shrimp though.

Chris

My humma humma leaves my cleaner shrimp alone, but he is only around 3". We will see when he gets bigger if he takes a bite.
