trimming back the zoo herd

To all,

I had my zoos on one piece of rather large LR. I have since moved it to another piece. In both cases, they are growing out of control. Any thoughts on how to trim them back. I am really not interested in fragging them. I simply want to trim them back quite a bit. I read the article someone else posted and realized that they are toxic. Last time I trimmed them, it didnt work out so well. I got them floating in the tank and they are now growing in other areas. Thanks in advance for the help.

I'm not sure I'm following you on wanting to trim, but not wanting to frag... Fragging is trimming them back. The toxicity thing is an over hyped, undocumented scare. With all the fragging of zoas, have you ever heard of one actual medically documented account? I haven't. I've had some numbness and dizziness after fragging zoas for two or three hours straight once, but I can't say that was palytoxin. I don't think anyone has any idea which zoas have palytoxin or how much the ones that do have palytoxin actually have (not many species are actually known to have palytoxin). Most recommend gloves, so that and goggles would almost eliminate even the slightest chance of anything happening.

As for fragging, I'd remove the rock from the tank and slice off whatever you need to slice off. If it is a dense rock, run a chisel along the edge and peel them off the the top layer (hammer and chisel will break porous rock, so if that's not what you're looking for, try an exacto knife or something). Run some carbon in the tank to help remove the nasties (as with fragging any soft type coral). HTH.

You can peel em back with an exacto knife and cut the mat. You can try gluing the mat to a shell and then sending it to a destitute college student reefer like myself too if ya like too =)

Or ya can just do whatever you were planning on doing with them after that. Either way its a fairly easy procedure

Thanks for the info everyone. I just want to trim them back as they are everywhere and not have to worry about attaching them to discs. Again, thanks.

hey nice try Drix! i give you an "A" for effort! if i had any thing to trim off one of my frags! i would send it to you!
