Trouble with LFS, Did Salinity Kill my fish??

ya, I've been debating as to raise it or not.. in summer the most it got was around 78.0, otherwise it usually stays around 77.0 granted I haven't ran my halides yet, that has been with the VHO....

Go to a different LFS. She does not know what she is talking about. Like someone already mentioned, reef or no reef, if the fish is in either situation it really should not make a difference. Your stats are fine except that I would bump up the salinity to 1.025-1.026. Other than that you are fine. I think from what you are saying, this particular blenny already had problems before you aquired him and that is what led to his death. Don't beat yourself up about it. We all have made mistakes. The important thing to do is learn from it. What I would learn from that is to shop at a different LFS for now on and make sure that she knows why.

I personally think your temperature is fine where it is. Just me :)

If anything i would say thise are a bit low. I would stop going to that store. My ph is 8.3-8.4 and my SG is about 1.026.

She obviously dosntknow much about saltwater fish.

Your parameters are fine.

Many lfs actually keep their tanks in the lower ranges 1.019 to 1.023 sometimes even lower than that.

If you think that is too low - then taking a tank down to 1.009 or so when people are treating for ich via hypo-salinity would wind up really killing all the fish.

I have a fowlr tank at work where the salinity is usually between 1.019 to 1.023 and all the fish are fine - from clownfish and damsels to anthias to an emperor angel.

Algae blennies are not the easiest fish, but neither are they that hard to acclimate either. It sounds like you did everything right. Unfortunately, this local lfs is still relying on antiquated information and is very ill-informed.

Now, is there a reason for that? possibly disease control, I think she mentioned to the wife that she keeps her tanks between .021 - .023.. (which I also believe the tank he was in was at .023) I'm just curious,, or are they just being cheap on the salt? <L>

Cheap on salt is my guess, since to eradicate ich it has to be down to .09. They may convince themselves it's for disease control, but I don't buy it. Keep in mind there are actually stores that know what they're doing, and don't bs you. The store here keeps there's at .025

I would imagine that also would go along with what is being fed too... Even with the all the advances in food, I'm sure it's hard to give our fish the exact nutrition they get in the wild... at least some fish.. <L>

This is sad about my LFS, she is the closest one for hours... I already didn't agree on many topics.. (captive breed fish/frags, she is totally against.. etc.) so this is just another topic she's not going to win with me,, I'm keeping my tank at the parameters.. well I'll probably get the SG back up to 1.025, otherwise.. I think it's doing great..
