True red PE vs red PE

These are what I consider to be actual red people eaters:

These are what I consider to be imitations, but labeled as such:

The first ones are "true" red people eaters, but since the second ones are labeled as "red people eaters" as well by some people, then they add the "true" to the first making them the "real deal."

I passed on some red people eats today. Lets just say if they looked like the "true red people eaters" I would have another new addition to my tank -- those true RPE are awesome!

Those PEs are found in Hawaii, and could be found in other places too.
They are Zoanthus gigantus and not "palys", like many like to call them.
By the way, all PEs are Zoanthus gigantus. They have green mouth and green lines when they close. Their discs are larger than any other Zoanthus spp. and they come in a variety of colors. Their distinctive shape and skirts will be different than other large zoanthids, like Palythoa grandis, with their rubbery looking structure (so beautiful!!).

The difference between the so called true reds and the other "reds" is simply because the other "reds" have some brown or orange pigments, so they are reddish brown, or reddish orange. The "true reds" display a vivid blood red.

There are other reddish PEs with a deeper dark red, very dark. Lighter colors would show beautiful pinkish/red and sometimes we see those reds with bright white marks, hard to find.
I'm terrible with pictures.
Hopefully other will post more shots of their red PEs.

Trues are from hawaii +1. they have a more distinct red, as well as some black. You'll know the difference once you've seen a true hawaiian one pictured above. It makes the "non true'" look like pooooo. lol

In Hawaii we've got many types of reds.
I'm not sure if other places would have them too, but I would think so.

The true reds from here don't have that black around the mouth.

How are you guys so sure that only Hawaii has the true reds?

Please keep in mind that the type of light used over the tank makes a big difference too.
Not to mention the camera you use for your pictues AND photoshop.

I have large colonies of both , there's no light that's gonna make one the other no camera and no photoshop that's gonna turn one into the other The two are night and day and collected from diff parts of the world.

Ill post pics tomorrow but I've had them forever , in diff tanks , water , lights etc.

....these are two different polyps

Do you mean different species, or different colors/morphs?
Thanks!
Don't forget the pictures, please!

heres the ones i have and the regions they were collected:

true red people eater (hawaiian) , im sure can be found somewhere else but majority comes from there.

fake red people eater( carribbean)

fake red people eaters ( indo/vietnam)

these three will change color slightly , but growth pattern and colors are usually always the same.

the word fake take with a grain of salt as they are all red lol hope this helps identify each, these are all my own pieces:)

I remember that I saw many pictures in the past showing the "True Red PEs" without the black around the mouth. I think was in an old website called Aloha Corals.
Some times I get very confused by what is what in the "cartoon dictionary".
I'm just terrible with usual names (cartoon names included!) and I do realize that many different people call different zoas very differently. LOL!!!
It's an interesting subject because the Hawaiian polyps are being discussed and I like to see the pictures of what you've got there.
We find all those polyps in Hawaiian waters for sure.
The last ones are kinda ugly, but still have their room in our tanks here.
We don't have too many choices in Hawaii and so when there is any "new" type of Hawaiian polyp we're more than happy to get for our simple tanks. It is illegal to import any invertebrate to the State of Hawaii. So zoas from other places can't come in. We need to be satisfied with what is from our costal waters and that's it!
You guys are so lucky to be able to have those wonderful colored polyps there!!

Thanks very much for the beautiful pics, reefwars!
Anyone else with some professional shots? :D

Yes lots of blue 3 watt cree leds and a few t5s. I have zoas and palys under different lights different tanks. The best coloration and growth so far seems to be under majority blue lights. I also have been using 20k metal halide and rb cree leds and they are loving it. My son is running all blue and purple leds and t5s and his zoas and palys are going crazy. Ridiculous colors. Every polyp he has put in his tank has increased coloration and has good growth.
