Trumpet problem-PLEASE read.

About 4 months ago my trumpet decided to go CRAZY. Splitting left and right. I didn't think it was ever gonna stop. Well, it finally stopped about a month ago. I have been keeping my calcium between 420-450.

The problem is this, all heads are attached, except one is dripping off of the backside of the colony, and flapping in the current. It is like it is still splitting from the original head, but it is only hanging on by its flesh. It has a bit of a hard skeleton at the very base of the head. Eventually it is going to finish splitting from the original head and fly around my tank.

What should I do???? Should I let it do its thing and then secure it somewhere so it can finish making it's skeleton, or is it a lost cause??

Actually, I think it may be TWO heads, from the looks of these pictures. Don't mind the color, haven't quite figured out my camera yet, and I had to manual focus but ya'll can see what I'm talking about. ~~~ Any advice or suggestions??

TIA for any help and Happy Reefing,
Brianna:rollface:

From what I hear this is a normal process for them to form a new colony. I don't know what to do in a circumstance like this, but I've heard of it a few times. I would assume it would settle down eventually and then grow from there, but I don't see the harm of putting it in a PVC circle with a net of it once it falls. Sorry for the confusion. Hope everything works out.

Thumbs up!

Kaserpick, THANKYOU!!!

It's good to hear from someone that they have at least heard of this happening. I'm not worried about the actual orig. colony, but more so worried what to do with the head once it comes free. But what you suggested is an awesome idea! :D So again, Thankyou!

Happy Reefing,

its called polyp extrusion. mine does it all the time. do like kaserpick said and it will form a skeleton. it only happens in my system with the colonies that are growing lollipop style like yours. i think they do it because there is no more room to grow up towards the ight.
