My new tank is a 400 gallon and sump will be about 200 gallons...Im trying to figure out the best method for heating the tank...for cooling Im thinking of going with geothermal cooling with a titanium coil....my concern with heating is using a ton of watts to heat the tank...Is this my only option??? or is there a way to plumb another titanium coil to my homes water heater?? if anyone has done this or has a good heating option then let me know please...thanks

Do you have the geothermal already installed in your home? or your going to do it just for the tank?

You would have to use a titanium coil, the hole thing could be a little costly not sure if it is worth it .
IMO I would just go with regular aquarium electric heaters.

Mike,

I plan to use a dedicated water heater to heat a future tank about your size. A small pump designed for boilers and a controller with temperature probes can be found in the Johnstone catalog. I also plan to use geothermal for cooling. I want to see how little energy can be used and still run a large reef tank. Two large skylights will provide most of the lighting.

I wish I could tell you more, but it is only plans at this point.....before I have a fishroom I have to build the house, before I break ground the land has to be paid off. To that end, I have a rental property for sale. We are so anxious to build.

Keep us posted.

Joe

Has anyone ever tried hooking up a titanium coil to the house water heater for a heating device??? I have heard of using a dedicated boiler system but I thought it would be cost effective to plumb into the existing home unit...
