TT and QT cover/lid

I'm heading to home depot tomorrow to purchase pvc elbows for my qt and tt buckets. I also need to get some type of cover for the tank/buckets (especially since they are wrasses), I know I've read to use "egg crates" but I seriously have no idea what is meant by that; is it reffering to flourescent light covers? Is there an alternative that is recommended or is that the best option? Cheaper is always better here :p

Also, should I do the TT for the wrasses (a carpenter flasher and a red velvet fairy wrasse) by keeping them together or should I give them each their own bucket?

This is what I call "egg crate" and use for covers on my QT: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Lithonia-Lighting-White-Eggcrate-T12-Troffer-Replacement-Diffuser-L2GT-PLTS-R5/100579509

Here is a better pic of what it looks like (although you probably don't need a 5-Pack): http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbranded-24-in-x-48-in-White-Egg-Crate-Lighting-Panel-5-Pack-LP2448EGG-5/202653781

If the fish looks small enough to jump thru the little holes, then you probably want to wrap the egg crate is something like wedding tulle to prevent that from happening.

Bird netting is cheap and has small holes. I found an expandable screen at lowes for $6 that covers my qt really well

Be careful using the eggcrate, you'd be surprised how big of a fish can fit through it and how well they can aim for those holes... I lost a 3.5" jawfish that managed to jump out through the eggcrate while in QT... Using a screen frame with netting now just because of him.

not sure if this would actually happen or not, but with splashing water (especially when using airstones), water will get on the lid and stay moist, so I reckon it is somewhat possible for ich to transfer... as such, i have a 2nd lid that a switch out each transfer.

Unlikely, but possible. Be anal about ANY water sharing! No sharing of equipment of any sort across tanks.

No worries on that, I got 7 of those lids coming and in-between TTM bucket switching I'll be wiping everything down with white vinegar and fresh water (including lids/covers) ASAP and then allowing to it air-dry to prevent any ich from tagging along :)

OH!
I completely forgot, with TTM I know it's not recommended to use a regular fish net, what should I be using?

For most fish I use my hand. I generally put on a vinyl glove when doing so. Just drain the tank down low and scoop 'em up.

For tangs and other spiny fish I use a small plastic kitchen colander.

Something about grabbing them with my hand seems cruel :p... Grabbing my foxface with my hands would be the exact opposite though :worried2:

My plan was to scoop them then pour the water out of the bucket :)

Would this work: http://www.amazon.com/Winco-MS3A-8D...&qid=1401675278&sr=8-2&keywords=mesh+strainer ? Keep in mind I'm using 5 gallon buckets for the TTM, not tanks!

The mesh likely will be too abrasive for the fish. Plastic with less but larger holes will be easier on them. Just go to walmart and you will find options.

A lot of people use plastic Tupperware and drill/poke holes in the bottom. Given your smaller space with the buckets this may be the best option.

Nothing wrong or stressful with using your hands. But yes a rabbit fish would not be recommended to do so with :)

Can't take credit for it, but something like this is what you guys want...

I can take credit for this one. It's the Mainstays colander set from Walmart (under $6). :D

THANK YOU! If the one I ordered from amazon doesn't work (and I have to resort to using it for its intended purpose :p) I know what to get next! :D

Thanks for the help everyone!

BTW - Should I put the wrasses (Red Velvet Fairy + McCosker's Flasher) in the same 5g bucket with 2-3 pieces of PVC or should I separate them?

Bump! Need an answer on this! BTW, sorry, I meant to say Carpenter's Wrasse, not McCosker's!

Thanks!

I would probably QT them separately in just a 5 gal bucket. No aggression or ammonia worries that way.

Or if you wanna try QT'ing them together, just keep a close eye on how they interact.
