tulip anemones

How do I kill these pests? They are spliting way to fast and are starting to irritate other corals. I have been epoxying over them but there are a few I can not reach. Any shrimp, or crab that eats them?

The most effective way I have found to get rid of them is to take the rock that they are on out and burn them with a lighter or propane torch. They don't come back after that (they do kinda stink).

That may not be an option for the ones you can't reach, but its the best way to get rid of pest anemones. Other than that, epoxy or kalk paste are less effective stop-gaps. They will **** off the anemones and make them hide for a while, but usually won't make them go away entirely. I am not aware of any reef-safe effective predators for majanos.

no reef safe preditors!!?? not good. And they are on some rocks that cant be pulled from the tank for one reason or another. epoxy is working, but they just pop up else where.

Might try some new searches with 'majanos' in the field, i couldnt think of what they were called. Thanks

There have been antedoctal reports of some pygmy angels eating them, but I haven't ever seen that from a reliable source. My guess is that some pygmys nip at everything and occasionally nip at the pest anemones. Some large angels (like emperors) will definently eat them. I have heard some people say that their copperband butterflys will eat them... but those are delicate, picky eaters, and I wouldn't recommend you try one for pest control (unless you have really wanted one anyway).

What about copperbands? Will they touch them?

PS, can we get a list of those words not allowed posted here? ;)

I have read some posts that suggested that some copperbands would eat them... but everyone who I have known personally has never had any luck with getting them to eat majanos.

In a well-skimmed, well-circulated tank, mojanos don't seem to become a nuisance. I have one that I have had for at least a year and it hasn't divided or moved at all. In the long long ago when I didn't keep SPS and let my tank stay 'dirtier' they became a problem.

And I am really ******* ****** that I don't know which ***** ****** **** words I ********can or can not use until I see them turned into a bunch of ***** symbols in my ***** **** post. I mean ***** ******** ******.
:)

I don't know that they directly feed off of either... so I'll just say "nutrients" :) They seem to thrive in tanks with heavy feedings but low nutrient export... and it seems they do better in lower flow tanks (but I really don't know if the flow has anything to do with it, it may be that it tends to be the case that people who keep high-flow tanks also tend to keep cleaner tanks... I dunno)

What I do know is that if you intentionally feed them (or your wife does) because you (or she) thought they were cute before you (or she) knew what they were... you will end up with hundreds.

Nothing but elbow grease will remove them.....Period!!!!!
I use a syringe with a needle filled with either kalk paste or white vinegar, both are effective but depending what livestock is near the anemone dictates what method I use.

Epoxying over them... hadn't thought of that!

I've tried needling them with kalk paste, didn't work. I've not tried vinegar, but unfortunately the one I need to kill most is planted in a small hole along the edge of a glued-down frag that I don't dare look at funny, much less spray vinegar next to.

Think I've got them down to 3 in my entire tank, which is an accomplishment. Have torn them off with tweezers while siphoning the bits and pieces, that seemed to work for some.

mwood, I've got one more peppermint (which IME do not eat tulips) to catch then I'll be emailing you to take them goddamned things off my hands!

Good luck with the anemones

I usually kalk PASTE mine.......about 3 scoops of kalk and a scoop of water and then shut all my pumps off, coat them and let them bake. If you don't do this more than once in a three or four day period it's pointless.

where might you find this kalk paste at? Any grocery stores or something?

You take regular kalkwasser and mix it with water, but when you mix it mix it THICK or it does no good.

Melt those reef terrorists ! Like slugs & salt ! :smokin:

I did that with some aptasia, and my ol lady felt sorry for them ... ha ! They deserve it for being so damned specialized !

I did boiling water with aptasia, didn't work have any complete success until I had peppermints to clean up the remains of their corpses.

Dropping the rock into boiling water would be another story, but syringe didn't work.

Acidlittle look for pickling lime at a grocery store or come over and borrow some kalk if you want to try kalk pasting them.

sounds good, I have a few (2 aptasia's ) that i need to zap but I am out of my aptasia control stuff that I bought Iowa pet foods. Do you use a stubby tipped syringe or one that has a nice sharp tip? And where do you get your syringe.

Oh yeah ryan do they have pickling lime at Hy-vee?
