Tuning in a skimmer

I'm only cycling right now but turned on the skimmer to just see it work. It's a Reef Devil deluxe and it's not new (as in I've had it working before). It's hooked to a mag7 at about 6" depth.
I close the gate valve until I see about 2" of bubbles in the tower, waited a few hours, then closed it a bit more. Does it simply take a while for junk to start getting caught by the bubbles, and then it will rise and overflow into the cup? Or should I keep closing the valve to get it higher?
Maybe there's just nothing to skim out yet and I should leave it alone?

Update, and probably answered my own question. This morning the skimmer bubbles were near the top.

Not dark and gross, but I will assume that it darkens as gunk gets in there. Once again, patience is king in this hobby. Seems like there's nothing you just turn on and get instant results.
