I just purchased four 6045's, for some reason, one of them starts in reverse about 95% of the time. I have to keep unplugging it, and plugging it in to get it to startup correctly.
It could be just gummed up with some of the vaseline used in assembly. Take out the impeller and clean it. It is pretty rare for new pumps to have any other defect that could cause this.
