How well does this perform? I would love to hear from people who own one and have firsthand experience with this skimmer. Any pics of it in the tank? Thanks!
 
I've had one for about a month. Thus far it has been pretty lack luster. I have a 9010 on my show tank and very pleased with it but the smaller version hasn't met expectations.

Very light green colored skimmate or no skimmate at all. There hasn't been any in between. Skimmer located in refugium/sump in the first baffle where the water remains constant level.

I like the overall size and how quiet it is but performance has not been at all what I hoped for on a 29g tank.
 
Same story for me. I have both and the 9010 is awesome, the other quite useless. For a tank that small in my experience, the venturi skimmers are a joke. I also just bought the new Rio skimmer. It needs to be hot rodded with an airstone. If it were my 29, save your money and get an AB or RedSea airstone driven skimmer. They are simple, inexpensive, and small and they just plain work. You're gonna need to save up because your bigger tank is on the way if you are really into this addiction like the rest of us!

The bigger tank won't come for a while as other needs will take priority over this hobby unfortunately so i will be stuck with the 29g for a few more years. I am really amazed that this 9002 Tunze skimmer isn't a good skimmer, everything I've heard up to this point about Tunze quality and performance led me to believe that this little skimmer would be ideally suited for my size tank. What's an AB skimmer? I've heard bad things about Red Sea. My main concern is since I have no sump to put a skimmer it will have to be an HOB model but i need to find one that performs well but doesn't have a leak or overflow issue...I absolutely cannot have water leak all over the wood floor!!!
 
The problem with small skimmers is...they are small. The body size just isn't large enough to work effectively. This is the case with all of the "nano skimmers". With a 29G, unless you want to add a sump, I would just keep up the water changes and run skimmerless.
 
I don't really want to run skimmerless...I have a large bioload so I need a skimmer, which would be best? It has to be reliable, perform good and not be prone to leaking. No sump is in the near future so of course it will have to be an HOB model but I would like one with a relatively small pump that doesn't take up a large portion of my tank (it's small enough as it is).
 
Any HOB skimmer has the potential for leaking. I setup a Deltec MCE600 for a friend which is extremely prone to overflowing and leaking all over the floor. The nice thing about the Tunze is it is in tank, can't leak onto the floor. The next model up is the 9005. It has the same 4.9 width, but is 4.4 deep instead of 2.1" Would the 2.3" increase in size be too much?
 
It sounds like everyone is comfortable and happy with the large Tunze Skimmers. Which one would you recommend for a 75 Gallon Reef/Fish Tank with a 20 Gallon Sump? I too am thinking of putting my skimmer in the first compartment of my sump where the water drains into.

I have a 9002 on a 29 FO/wlr with about 12in total fish length,and it seems to be working good.It took a while to "tune" it in for the Bio-load but now its producing good skimmate,and operates nice and quiet.
 
Robert, I have about 12" total fish length too...Ocellaris Clown, Purple Firefish, Yellow Watchman Goby and Blue/Green Chromis plus I have quite a few corals...would this skimmer be able to handle that? Is it easy to tune?
 
i got a question for ya.. ill be running two 40 gallon breeders an a 40 long sump on my frag tank.. im just starting to reasearch my skimmers.. all opinions are welcome..from cheap to expensive the pros an the cons..thanks..

You tune in the 9002 with the blue screw closed and then opening it until the working foam rises to the base of the skimmate cup. Let it run there for 24 hrs. then open the screw a little at a time until the working foam is about a 1/2 to 3/4 in. up in the skimmate tube in the cup. Depending on your Bio load you may have to adjust the working foam up or down to get skimmate forming. Your not going to get skimmate over night like some claim with other skimmers. Once it's set up and skimming you can all but let it go without readjusting all the time and you won't see micro bubbles in the tank and it runs quiet.
