Im fairly knew to the community, just set up my first 40 breeder saltwater tank and im wondering what skimmer i should get. (my tank is currently cycling) Tunze 9004 or Eshopps HOB Psk100h?The tank will be a both coral and fish, im thinking 2 clown to start and a few coral (as i will be going to the BAR frag swap)

I sadly cannot have a sump because the tank is tempered so if you have any other recommendations they would have to be HOB or in tank

Thanks in advance for your help!:wavehand:

I have the same tank without a sump and have the tunze 9004. I have four fish and a growing number of coral including SPS. Although the 9004 is ok it could be better. I have no other experience with other skimmers on my tank. I have considered the tunze 9012 if I was to upgrade

9004 is great. Will work for your tank size. Also since it's in tank it will not over flow onto the floor which is a big concern with hob skimmers. I believe this skimmer is rated for 40 gallon tanks. Do not get the 9012. It's much bigger, more expensive and for bigger tanks. The 9004 is good enough. I used the 9004 for 2 years in a 90 till I had to upgrade to 9012 when my bioload increased. It's a workhorse.

I guess it depends on your bioload. If you don't plan to overstock your tank then the 9004 is great. I don't have any problems with mine but with my growing amount of corals I wonder if I'll need to upgrade. In a heavy stocked tank the 9004 is limited to 40 gallons. The 9012 is a lot taller but will still fit. Yes it is a lot more expensive.

I had something similar to the tunze in a 36 gallon bowfront and personally I think it's too small for anything over a 30. I tend to like to go oversized on skimmers if possible. If those are your two choices, I'd go with the Eshopps

Thanks for all the input, im leaning more towards the tunze now.

They are not my only choices, if you would like to recommend something different im all ears but those 2 are the ones that ive liked and found you get the most for your money.

When u say "similiar" it was not a 9004 then.

When I was researching a skimmer for my bowfront, the tunze was one of the ones I considdered. I forgot why I went with the Aquaticlife skimmer http://a.co/4dDhH0v

But they are both "similar". I had nutrient problems and tho the Aquaticlife skimmer skimmed really well, it just wasn't enough. I didn't even have a heavy bioload. If I had to do it over again, I would've went with a larger HOB like https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/reef-octopus-bh100-hang-on-the-back-protein-skimmer-1.html or similar
