Tunze 9005 or Octopus DNW-110

The Tunze DOC 9005 is rated for a 132g Tank
Very small footprint and low wattage
Experience with my Tunze 9002 is that it's super quiet.
Skims very wet!

The Octopus DNW-110 is rated for a 120g Tank
Footprint is just perfect for my tank and pretty low wattage
It has recirculation and a cup drain already
Might skim darker than tunze?

So it looks like the tunze is rated higher, but I know ratings are hard to tell. The octopus is also $50 cheaper.

I'm thinking if the tunze were a recirc it would far outdo the DNW-110, and the only reason the 110 can compete is it's recirculation.

Which would you recommend to be more efficient for a 68 gallon SPS tank + 30g Sump?

Thanks!!

Man Kinetic, I've been seriously debating between these (ever since you mentioned the Tunze), and a Euro-Reef. The euro-reef is on sale and would be cheaper than both, and has an extremely good reputation.

You may want to ask in the Tunze forum about skimming wet with the 9005. I was actually wondering this also. I'm leaning towards the Tunze. The small size, low wattage, and low noise are very hard to beat.

I don't know much about the Tunze but I can say I am very happy with my Reef Octo. I have the one of the bigger Recircs. They can skim dark.

That ER mentioned by accord is not a recirc if you look and the non recirc Octo it is still cheaper the the ER.

yeah, Tunze keeps coming back as an option. It's really quiet, and probably much quieter than any other skimmer, plus small and low powered.

you can also get a tunze doc rated for more than 370 gallons and it'd still be smaller than another skimmer rated for 80 gallons =P

i'll head over to the tunze forum.

what model is your octopus? do you have a pic of the skimmate?

HAD the DOC 9005 on my frag tank, not a great skimmer by any means.

It would pull out only 20 cc of skimmate per week much less than even the aqua C's. Go with something else.

that sucks. my nano remora has pulled 0 skimmate since I've gotten it (2 months ago) while my tunze nano 9002 has pulled maybe a cup a week.

I think I am going to go with the 9010 rather than the 9005

only difference b/ 9005 and 9010 is collection cup size. same pump with slightly longer riser tube which would probably mean a thicker skimmate. but if it's barely making any skimmate with the shorter riser tube in the 9005, you'll hardly get any with the 9010 unless your tank is loaded with fish poo. hope that helps.

If noise is a factor the tunze will be way quieter

Have you used an Octopus? Mine is dead silent.

I'm thinking a Octopus with a direct feed from the drain from the overflow, recirculation, may do better even though it's rated much less than a Tunze 9010?

The tunze still pulls out of the chamber I guess, but no direct feed =/ It also doesn't do recirculation, but I guess it still draws water out of that same chamber.

ok, so a 120 gallon rated octopus with direct feed and recirc or a Tunze 9010 rated for 264 gallons that draws water from the skimmer chamber w/o recirculation?

Two different people in my club have the Deltec that is the same size as my Octo. For the $800 mark up it is totally not worth it.

More skimming ability and slightly noisier vs. quiet questionable skimming.

I own an Octo and I've considered the Tunze for a QT tank 4 feet from my bed. Quiet but not that powerful I've heard from more than one Tunze owner.

Yep yep i have owned two pci octo skimmers sold them both. However they both had the pci genx needle wheel pumps.
Tunze is way quieter.

They have from Coralvue everyone once in a awhile. They never had a real steady supply of them.
