I can't even get the foam into the collection cup. There is an opening about an inch from the top of the housing opposite the intake and outlet, that is spouting out a stream of water, is this supposed to be happening??? hoping this is the problem, but i covered it with my finger and still no luck...what am I missing?
Ignore the water flowing out of the upper back. That is normal.
Do you have foam in the reaction tube?
If in-sump mode, do you have water flowing out of the vertical tube?
If in-aquarium mode, do you have the water level at the "blue line?"

Check the following:

- Blue screw out almost all the way
- Internal air tube inserted into pump outlet
- If in-aquarium mode, ensure correct parts used per page 16 (http://www.tunze.com/fileadmin/gebrauchsanleitungen/x9010.8888.pdf)
- If in-sump mode, ensure correct parts used per page 34
- If in-sump mode, ensure that bottom plate is solid (no grating) and resting on solid surface to seal water inside.

Compare the pictures of the bottom plate on pages 16 and 34:

Part #1 of page 16 shows a plate with grating for in-aquarium mode. It allows water inside the skimmer body. The water inside and outside the skimmer must be at the "blue line." If the water is too low, the foam will never reach the cup.

Part #7 of page 34 shows a solid plate with suction cups for in-sump mode. The pump and the vertical pipe keeps water inside the skimmer at the correct level for foam to reach the cup. The sump water level can be 4" to 11" deep. To keep the internal water level high, the bottom plate must be solid and sealed by resting on a solid surface such as a platform or the bottom of the sump. If the seal leaks, the internal water level will be too low.
