Tunze ATO question

I was setting up my ATO unit yesterday and thought I had it set up correctly. I had the optical eye set at where I wanted the top water level and the safety float up just a little higher. I then turned the unit on and if filled the sump to where I wanted it. A few minutes later it came back on and filled up over the optical eye until I pushed the float down which made it alarm and shut it off. Where does the ATO shut off at? I thought about 1/2 way up the pointed piece on the optical eye it would shut off.

Thanks!

That is generally correct, however, it pumps for about 15 seconds everytime it is powered up regardless, it does that as part of a self check and to prime the pump. It also runs the pump for 10 seconds after a fill is detected as a deliberate overfill to reduce the number of off and on cycles in a day. The amount of the fill can be adjusted and should be if the tank is very small (less than 40 gallons). In general though, the issue will be bubbles accumulating on the sensor, this is very common with the new plastic of the sensor as it only detects air vs water and cannot differentiate between bubbles and being dry. Move it to a place with as few bubbles as possible.
