tunze calcium rx

Roger or anyone who uses the tunze calc. rx. Do you think this rx could handle a moderately stocked mixed 180gal. reef. Also, must tunze's rx media be used or is ARM media sufficient. thanks alot,
scott

I think it would handle such a set up, especially if used in conjunction with kalkwasser. The Tunze media is suggested as it is pure CaCO3, it is basically pulverised chalk. As a result it dissolves without any residue which could clog the pump.

i guess we are gonna find out if this thing can handle a 180. To be honest, i'm kinda unsure since this rx is so small, but Tunze has yet to let me down. Anyway, i ordered one from marine depot and will update when it arrives. :D

According to the specifications, close to full capacity using the reactor and optional second chamber at 32 ml/min and 60 bpm the system shall be able to add aprox 2.2 to 2.4 dKh of alkalinity per day to a system with 180 gals of water.
Also by specifications you shall be able to add about 35% more doubling the CO2 bubble rate to 120 bpm but in my experience at that CO2 rate even with the second chamber the lowering effect on the tank PH will be increased.
This is again according to specifications.
So if your actual supplementation is equivalent to about 2.5 dKh (about .9 meq/lt) you will be running close to max capacity with little or no room for variation.

i add around 1-1.5dkh daily so I think I will be O.K. I can also add a little kalk to my top off bin if need be. Thanks Jdieck for doing the math, I was hoping someone would do that. Math was never my thing:D . So it looks like this this really is gonna handle a 180 by the numbers at least. Updates to come

Just note that you need to insure that your evaporation is enough to add the remining 0.6 to 0.7 meq/lt. which will take about 3 gallons per day of saturated Kalk.
Also note that I mentioned according to specifications but IME I see a lot of variations on those in practice.

ok guys i've had this thing running for 2 days now. I have the Co2 at 120bpm and 180 drops pm at the outlet. First of all the unit itself is extremely small. I also had to rinse the media alot before it started to run clear, but thats ok. I am still trying to dial it in so i have had to add a little 2 part to keep the tank ~420 and 9dkh, but not much. I think its gonna work out fine. I do have a couple questions for Roger. First, how long do you think the media will last before i need to refill, it really is a pretty small container? Also, and this has really been frustrating, the dial for the outlet adjustment really sucks. I have to put a small pin from the outlet in a way that diverts the flow out a little in order to count the drops. If I dont do this the flow from the outlet runs from the outlet and down the side in a way that prevents me from counting the drops. Wow, i hope that makes sense. Anyway, I will continue to update as I get this thing dialed in.

In my 120 which I set up roughly the same but with more drops per minute (240), the media fill lasts about 3-4 months, but at 3-4 months there is really almost nothing left. I agree on the drip rate adjustment, what I ended up doing was gluing in a short length of the straw that comes with a can of WD-40, a new one of course. I just glued in with epoxy a 1/4" length and it made it a lot easier to calibrate.

I would recommend to top off with media when the level has fallen about 1/4 of the total quantity. Beyond that although the media continue dissolving the alkalinity of the effluent starts to drop.

Update time. Its been a few weeks since i got this rx going and i have been extremely pleased. My alk is rock steady at 9.6dKh and calc. is 420. I haven't had to touch anything on the rx since i got it dialed in. I did have to dial the co2 down a little when setting up because it was raising levels too high, which tells me I probably have a little room to grow. I really can not tell you guys how impressed i am. THumbs up again for Tunze.
